Why play it

Silent Hill 2 Remake is a ground-up reimagining of the 2001 psychological horror game. It follows James Sunderland as he searches for his deceased wife in the fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill. The remake features entirely rebuilt visuals in Unreal Engine 5, over-the-shoulder gameplay, reworked combat, and new voice acting. The Deluxe Edition contains the main game, a digital artbook, the digital soundtrack, and Pyramid Head Mask (pizza box).

Story and worldbuilding

Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James Sunderland heads to Silent Hill, where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her… "My name... is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her.

Silent Hill 2 is a great way to visit – or revisit – one of the most dread-inducing destinations in the history of survival horror.

Remaking one of the most revered horror games ever is no simple task, but Bloober Team impressively rebottles the magic of the 2001 genre landmark.

Against the odds, Bloober Team has delivered a remake that both expands Silent Hill 2 in just the right places, and gives careful attention to what it preserves.

Silent Hill 2's remake is a fun but flawed take on a flawless gem.

Does a good job of making the series feel relevant in a way it hasn't for years.

Despite the difficult revelations Silent Hill 2 unveils along the way and how uncomfortable the experience made me (by design) I was eager to immediately start the journey again after seeing the credits.

This remake of the 2001 hit is frustratingly slow, long and filled with one-dimensional characters

Silent Hill 2 is a skilfully handled retelling of one of the medium's most loved survival horror games. It stays faithful to the original (to a fault at times) but breathes enough new life into it to simultaneously ensure that long-time fans will appreciate the respect shown, while newcomers won't find it antiquated.

A good-looking and unflinchingly loyal remake of the beloved 2001 horror game, yet one that plays everything safe.

Bloober Team… You made me happy, and after playing Silent Hill 2, I am eager to see what the studio does alongside Konami in future. Perhaps a Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 3 remake isn’t such a bad idea, after all…
