The Nordic saga of Arctic Hazard plays it safe by blending tactical combat, management, and a revenge story that’s enjoyable but not without its technical flaws. Norse: Oath of Blood stands as a work with literary soul but whose technical execution prevents it from reaching greatness. Gunnar’s revenge story works, but it’s predictable. As for the tactical combat, it’s built on the genre’s foundations but suffers from a lack of variety and pacing issues.

Highly accomplished tactical strategy game with a Viking theme, excelling in its atmosphere, dialogue, and cinematic cutscenes. The balance between settlement management and combat missions works convincingly well. The experience is held back primarily by technical issues, though these may be resolved over time.

Unfortunately, despite me really wanting to like and recommend NORSE: Oath of Blood, it seemed to fight me at every turn. There is something here that I hope will eventually be great. Perhaps in a few more months, after a handful of patches, this can be something good, because the foundation is there. Combat is fun, and there is a nice variety of moves and combinations with the attacks. While I would like a bit more freedom with the base building, I can see how a more streamlined version would appeal to some. However, none of this can shine in the state it is currently in.

NORSE: Oath of Blood has a good story, a fun settlement structure, and clear turn-based combat. The voice acting is really strong. However, there are many minor bugs, strange visual moments, and sometimes the hub simply doesn't feel like much. As a result, it currently feels more like an early access game than a finished one. Hopefully, updates will be released soon to fix the remaining bugs, because then this will simply be a much stronger game.

NORSE: Oath of Blood is a decent Viking-themed turn-based title whose strengths lie in its well-told narrative, gripping voice acting, and interesting characters and dialogue. However, it’s hindered by its plethora of visual and in-game bugs, as well as several unpolished odds and ends here and there that only add to a frustrating experience.

Base building and activities between combat missions were nicely streamlined and kept the overall momentum going. Like a good movie or TV series, Norse: Oath of Blood balances historical elements with entertainment, then adds engaging combat and varied side content to round out the package.

NORSE: Oath of Blood is a mixed title, with interesting ideas and a fascinating setting, but penalized by unstable technical implementation and mediocre design.

If you are a fan of the genre and can tolerate some jank—or if you are willing to save-scum your way around bugs—it is worth playing right now for the narrative alone. But for everyone else? It might be wise to wait for Patch 1.1 or 1.2.

NORSE: Oath of Blood is not a failure to overlook the bigger picture; rather, it is an examination of how to establish goals that are realistic. It creates a single Viking identity by combining elements such as structured storytelling, simple settlement management, and trained fighters who are competent in tactical combat.

Norse: Oath of Blood is an excellent game, but marked by a feeling of unrealized potential… at least for now.
