Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War is dull, uninspired, and devoid of the series' characteristic wit.
Read full review ↗Playing as a Trooper or a Bug in this stylised retro shooter is every bit as entertaining as the movie that inspired it, with a bonus hit of nostalgia for fans of golden-era military shooters. It doesn't take a brain bug to realise that multiplayer would have been a great addition to round out the package, though.
Read full review ↗Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War is a great, 5 hour FPS in the style of retro shooters from days long gone by. The theme, aesthetic, voice acting and everything about the game is well done and while some aspects could have used a bit more polish or fleshing out a bit more, the game is well worth the asking price and I can highly recommend it to players wanting a fun FPS to enjoy. Do your part for the Federation today! Give Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War a go. Chances are, you’ll really enjoy the game
Read full review ↗The game looks great and surprisingly combines two visual styles. While levels are vast 3D environments reminiscent of later boomer shooters from the late 90s/early 2000s, enemies and NPCs are 2D 16-bit pixelated characters. It works given the non serious tone of the game. Between missions, you’ll be treated to movie like cutscenes featuring General Johnny Rico and Major Samantha “Sammy” Dietz along with others characters looking to “recruit” you. On the audio side of things, nothing major to report. The soundtrack is minimal lost through the banter of your colleagues. Speaking of which, it’s enjoyable with a bit of humor. The game does have a few nuisance. The first one being the repetitiveness of the objectives. It often feels like you’re doing the same thing in different levels. Another issue is the lack of vehicles. While the maps aren’t that huge, running/walking from one objective to another is tedious and boring. Thankfully, with a mech, you’ll go a bit faster.
Read full review ↗Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War is a spot-on celebration of the movie and of the boomer shooters from its era. A couple of the gameplay elements stumble, and the difficulty may prove too much for some recruits, but fans will be glad to do their part.
Read full review ↗Starship Troopers Ultimate Bug War is a solid experiment in old-school 2D FPS design-fun and ferocious. It's a shame it only lasts around four hours, and in the gameplay-both as humans and aliens-you can glimpse some untapped potential. Still, it feels like the right foundation on which to build a bigger and better sequel in the future.
Read full review ↗For fans of the original movie, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! will be one of the best games ever based on the film. For younger players, this might feel like the Stone Age of cinema, but that doesn’t change the fact that the game delivers solid, adrenaline-fueled action and a great shooting experience. The bugs outnumber you, and each soldier has only a short lifespan. Plenty of Easter eggs and the return of Casper Van Dien are the icing on the cake. The limited content and short playtime are a bit of a letdown, but this is offset by a fair price and the fact that the game doesn’t fall into a rut. Plus, the bonus missions against the bugs are absolutely awesome.
Read full review ↗It’s been a long time since I finished a game and then immediately went back to play it again. Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is totally sorted and a massive win for fans of the flick. The pixel art is proper boss, and even though the lack of multiplayer is a bit rubbish, the carnage on offer is top-tier. Playing as a bug is a godsend for the motion sickness, and the whole thing is just brilliant fun. You’d be a total melon to miss this one. Get it bought!
