Simon the Sorcerer: Origins is a solid return for a beloved series, and the developers at Smallthing Studios seem more than capable of carrying on these magical adventures.

Smallthing Studios has succeeded at what matters most: preserving Simon’s soul. It allows longtime fans to return to a beloved world, while opening the door for new generations to experience an adventure that transcends age and time. If you enjoy point-and-click adventures—whether you’re old school or new—this is a title you should not miss.

It is easy to want to like Simon the Sorcerer Origins at first glance. The artwork is beautiful, and the puzzles are clever and creative. However, Simon sadly comes off as a murder-hobo rather than a charming rogue. Also, while the game's comedy is quite fun in itself, it needs more palate cleansers. As is, this feels like a six-hour-long slapstick show, a genre best served in 30-minute portions.

The cult adventure series Simon the Sorcerer is back! But is there anything to get excited about? Not really. This bland, unsalted adventure game won't even make a dog bark in a few months.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is a rare, complete alignment of concept, craft, and heart; a flawless prequel that honours its legacy while confidently reinventing it for today. Every element works in concert: the hand‑drawn animation sings with personality, the writing lands with relentless wit and unexpected tenderness, puzzles are clever without ever feeling cruel, and the audio elevates moments from amusing to unforgettable. This is not nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake; it’s a full‑blooded reinvention that keeps the soul of the original intact while offering modern players something genuinely new.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is one of those games that sneaks up on you. I went in not knowing much about it, and never having played the originals, but found myself genuinely enjoying the world, the humour, and the art style. The story is quirky in all the right ways, the writing hits that perfect mix of snark and sincerity, and the visuals give it a personality all its own.

For those who carry a nostalgic torch for the franchise, Simon the Sorcerer Origins is as close as you'll get to the original in 2025.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or a complete newbie, Simon the Sorcerer Origins has plenty to enjoy and will make you smile aplenty. Brimming with care and love, the game keeps its puzzly sarcastic roots. Whilst also bringing it warmly into the modern adventure game world. It has a number of jarring elements, but they are spaced out and rarely frustrating, giving way to its undeniable vibrancy and charm. Therefore it receives the Thumb Culture Silver Award! Be sure to share it with Swampling, eh Simon?

But even so, Simon the Sorcerer Origins is a great experience if you want to enjoy a wonderful story. There are lots of gags in there, and they don’t shy away from adding some creative gameplay ideas. Sure, there are small frustrations, like stiff animations at times or bad inventory management, but that didn’t push me away from the game. If anything, it’s a solid game that certainly earns its spot as one of the best adventure games in the past few years.
