Of the retro titles out there, Shrine’s Legacy is a cut above. Several games like this may feel like cheap-to-develop cash grabs, or like someone made them just to relive the old days but doesn’t know how to make a good game. I’m critical of this style of game. Despite its failings and mediocrity, I enjoyed my time with Shrine’s Legacy. A bit simple, a bit weak, a bit buggy, but full of outstanding map design, charm, and great ideas. I hope the developers find some success and make an even better game in the future. I’ll be waiting.

Shrine's Legacy is a pure love letter to classic SNES action RPGs. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel—instead, it offers a simple, nostalgic journey designed to transport both veteran and new players back to a simpler time. Best of all? You can bring a buddy along for two-player co-op.

Shrine's Legacy won't change how you view games, but it's a nod to an era of video games that left a significant impact.

Ultimately, Shrine’s Legacy is a game brimming with passion and care that misses the mark on a few key elements. Those looking to fill a SNES-era RPG hole in their hearts will certainly find something to enjoy here, as the game carries the charm of that era in its narrative, visual design, and structure. While combat can be one-note and awkward at times, and the dungeons are incredibly basic in their design, none of these problems prevent the game from being a fun romp.

Shrine’s Legacy is the kind of game that reminds me why I fell in love with gaming in the first place. It’s approachable, nostalgic, and just plain fun. Whether you’re chasing that retro feeling or introducing a friend to the magic of 16-bit adventures, this is one quest well worth taking.

Shrine's Legacy wears its nostalgic roots on its sleeves, with charming characters, cool-looking environments, head-bopping music, and an incredible villain. But the spikes in difficulty with a lot of bosses, coupled with the stiff and slow gameplay approach, dampened my otherwise great experience. While it is an inexpensive game to purchase, if you are planning to play solo, it may not be worth picking up due to its numerous flaws. If you do have a coop partner, however, the legacy this game leaves behind will be a much sweeter memory to you than how bitter it was for me.

The combat does feel a little stiff, while the magic and jewel system is unnecessarily complicated. But even so, if you're looking for an action RPG that scratches that retro itch, Shrine's Legacy is definitely one worth diving into.

Shrine's Legacy pulls you back to the 16-bit era of gaming. With a strong story, great visuals, and fantastic music, this is a game you should try, whether solo or with a friend.
