Why play it

A relaxing puzzle game where you create music by solving mazes.

Story and worldbuilding

Travel from planet to planet and discover the music hidden inside. Solve the six puzzles on the sides of the planet by drawing a path that ends where it started, creating a loop. Hear the music slowly unfold as the loops generate unique musical sequences that layers together with the rest of the planet's loops. Play on top of the music from the planet with a great selection of fun unlockable musical toys. The universe is full of cubic planets, which all contains six maze-puzzles to be solved. The path in the maze is drawn by swiping the cursor in a given direction, and it will draw as long as there is a surface underneath. By hitting so-called sound emitters on its way, the cursor activates different tones, percussion elements or musical chords. Each time you solve a new side of a planet a new musical loop is added to the previous one, revealing more and more of a musical composition.

Rytmos is short and sweet, and its minimalist visuals and zen-like beats left me feeling warm. Its puzzles match everything else the game is doing, and it all works together well to highlight the music, its inspirations’ place in history, and the instruments that create it. The audiophile pedigree of Floppy Club shines through in Rytmos, and it feels designed specifically with musicians and music enthusiasts in mind, but puzzle fiends will also find a chill afternoon of challenges to play through here, too.

Rytmos is a fun puzzle game. Regenerating the different planets, and making songs give the player a satisfying feeling. A little more of a challenge or maybe some different modes would have been great. But overall Rytmos is a great addition to any puzzle fans library.

However, what made this game truly a standout was that it not just used music as a way to enhance gameplay, but to actually teach me more about the music used. It felt as if the developers really wanted to share their love of music from all over the world with me. I could've never told you how African jazz sounded before playing this game, and I am really glad I discovered a genre like this thanks to Rytmos. The Switch version stutters occasionally and isn't a perfect port, but if you're looking for an easy to understand puzzle game that will get you through a few hours, this is absolutely one you should turn up the volume for.

Rytmos is a meditative music-making experience with a specific goal in mind – sharing the music of the world, with the world. With well-designed puzzles and diverse influences, it’s worth the play if you’re keen on a relaxing, musical experience.

Rytmos is an engaging and curious musical experience. The puzzles, which require manipulating lines to create paths passing through speakers, are interesting and full of creative elements. The setting, which explores unusual musical genres, enchants with the use of vibrant colors, a soundtrack with several layers and historical explanations about each sound style. The problem is that everything is too simple, leaving the feeling that the game could go further in its proposal. Overall, it's great to delve into Rytmos' brief and elaborate musical universe.

Overall, I really enjoyed playing Rytmos. While I cannot play a musical instrument in real life, I don’t think that matters when playing Rytmos. The developers have made the game so that it is educational, entertaining and, most of all, fun. Puzzle fans should enjoy this musical trip worldwide; you never know, you might even learn something new.
