Luna Abyss is a AA shooter that holds its own against some of the elite of the genre. Its enticing and ominous sci-fi world is a delight to look at artistically, even if its muddy graphics let it down on closer inspection. Its story is fine, but a slick sense of progression keeps its action and platforming interesting from start to finish.

Luna Abyss is more than the sum of its parts, with individual pieces that will all feel familiar, so much so that you've likely played a dozen games just like it. But it's standout character design, environmental storytelling, performances, writing, level design, first-person shooting combat and 3D platforming that ends before it has a chance to outstay its welcome make it a must-play for single-player shooter fans.

Luna Abyss is half bullet-hell FPS, half platformer and all Heavy Metal Euro-sci-fi weirdness.

Luna Abyss is one of those moments when a game becomes more than a pleasant surprise, it’s when a game becomes a complete joy to play. It has fantastic platforming and bullet hell inspired combat with an intriguing narrative. While not all of what’s happening in Luna Abyss is adequately explained, it’s a wonderful dive into a universe that I would love to see more off.

Even with its flaws, Luna Abyss’ rewarding traversal, intriguing worldbuilding, and memorable boss encounters make it worth recommending to fans of Returnal, NieR, and Doom.

Luna Abyss is a remarkably brave debut that understands that intense bullet-hell action means nothing without a world worth fighting for. While its limited four-weapon arsenal and rigid shield mechanics occasionally drag down the combat, the game heavily compensates with an incredibly oppressive atmosphere, superb sound design, and a genuine narrative mystique that keeps you hooked from the first minute. It carries the cracks of a debut, but it speaks with the voice of a seasoned veteran.

Luna Abyss is a peculiar game. If taken solely for its shooter component, it would barely reach a passing grade. But if we add to this excellent worldbuilding—fascinating, mysterious, and disturbing—a great atmosphere, beautiful settings (not all, but most), and truly successful platforming sections, then it goes from passing grade to excellent in an instant.

While short, Luna Abyss did an amazing job crafting a captivating story that had me wondering what would happen next, and with a bigger budget, they have the potential to pump out an even greater game. That said, I enjoyed what was produced and look forward to the next instalment.

Aside from some pacing issues and an art direction that hampers visibility during exploration segments, Luna Abyss is an interesting first-person action game.
