Formula Legends is an absolutely excellent idea for a loving, off-brand homage to the sport of F1 executed with a pile of charm (and an even bigger pile of imaginative content), but its laggy handling takes some warming to and its AI racers frustrate.

Ultimately, Formula Legends is a game with a lot of heart, born of a genuine passion for motorsport—a passion that shines through in nearly every track, vehicle, and character design. Its massive scope, loving tribute to F1 history, and intriguing blend of arcade and simulation elements make it a compelling proposition for motorsport fans unbothered by the lack of official licenses. At the same time, however, the idiosyncratic and occasionally frustrating handling, unbalanced AI, and absence of multiplayer modes prevent the game from truly competing with established rivals. Players willing to grapple with a steep learning curve—and who prioritize the racing simulation experience over technical polish—will find Formula Legends to be a surprisingly deep and lovingly crafted journey through Formula 1 history. Conversely, those seeking instant fun and a smooth, well-balanced gameplay experience would do better to wait and see if future updates address the game's major shortcomings.

Formula Legends is definitely an interesting game that, with its simple design and controls, takes you through entire generations of the Formula 1 racing championship. If you’re looking for something lighthearted to help pass the time while waiting for the new season, just want to relax with something simple, or are looking for a gentle game for your kids, Formula Legends is exactly what you’re looking for. Seven and a half out of ten.

There is a lot in Formula Legends that I could see why it is appealing. The reason I was interested in it is that it didn’t look like your typical racing experience. For the most part thats kinda true, though not in the way that was desired on my end. The game is extremely punishing, even on its easiest setting, and it can be weirdly selective on when it wants to really force you into a sim experience and when it doesn’t.

The new racing game is visually pleasing and conceptually interesting, but with untuned gameplay. The idea of & 8203;& 8203;combining an arcade look with more serious simulation elements is nice, but the result feels unfinished.

While, as an F1 fan, I admire the attention to detail that went into faithfully cramming seven decades of F1 racing into an enjoyable unlicensed arcade racing game, the framerate, dynamic resolution, and color hue issues make this a port to avoid if you have the option to play on more powerful platforms. Nothing suggests why a Switch port should be so difficult to pull off with its cartoonish, Micro Machines-like look, but the conclusion is that 3DClouds, or the party responsible for the port, has failed to do so. As for this version, it’s knocked out of Q1 due to technical issues and the stiff competition in the crowded retro arcade racing genre.

"Formula Legends" is a passion project created by F1 fans to celebrate the sport's history. While its ambitious vision and the developers' commendable effort are evident, existing issues ultimately prevent it from becoming a flawless title.

Formula Legends is clearly a game made by fans of the most prestigious category in motorsport, however, despite having good ideas and taking the player on a time-traveling journey through the history of the category, the lack of game modes and some other structural issues end up limiting what could have been an excellent racing game.

It’s that simple: Formula Legends is a must-have for Formula 1 fans, who on the Nintendo Switch may feel “forgotten” by the category’s official racing games. Although it has a difficulty level that some might consider a bit overwhelming, the game excels at everything it sets out to do, and it offers a lot. Drive cars from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s in a robust story mode or in custom modes. Choose different versions of 14 circuits and train to become the fastest in this game that blends arcade elements with simulation. The visuals are cool, the unlockables are varied, the sensation of speed is high, the replayability is also high, and the price is affordable. It just needs a little optimization, which the developers should address in the future. One of the best motorsport experiences available on the Nintendo Switch

Formula Legends has a story mode that would keep fans entertained for hours and hours, but I really can’t imagine sinking the time it must take to trudge through that many races. Despite being an arcade racer, it’s a bit lacking in variety. It’s as if attention to detail is standing in the way of letting players off the leash. With the addition of co-op at the very least, and a complete overhaul of the handling mechanics, it might be a bit easier to recommend Formula Legends. Until then, for now, I’d suggest that you steer clear.
