Why play it

Despot’s Game is rogue-like tactics with turbo-charged battles. Build a team and sacrifice the heck out of them to rush through enemies... and other players!

Story and worldbuilding

A group of people wake up in a strange post-apocalyptic labyrinth — naked, with no memories and with a bunch of weapons. Is this a joke, a crazy experiment, or... a game? You'll find out soon enough, just try not to die first! Your puny squad is capable of much more. Choose your loot and transform the squishy humans into wizards, cultists, ninjas and dozens of other heroes, including the mythical stale pretzel throwers. With perks and class combos, there are thousands of ways to build your army. The man-eating cabbage will appreciate the variety in its diet! If you can survive the labyrinth, you'll meet THE UNSTOPPABLE END-GAME BUILDS OF OTHER PLAYERS! You'll beat each other to death and only one will be spared by d'Spot. No offense, but in his own game he writes the rules! Prepare your warriors and let them fight it out on their own! Indirect combat allows you to focus heavily on tactical considerations rather than reflexes. Strengthen your front line with fridge-movers, aim your food-throwers and look after your Forbidden Summoners! The dungeons are generated from scratch every time, and there is no chance puny humans will ever find the way out! And even if they strike lucky — don't worry, there are endless ways to die in Despot's Game!

Despot's Game is an unusual combination of genres that adds something fresh to the scene. It's fast-paced and enjoyable in short bursts, with upgrades that help keep things interesting. The randomized runs won't be for everyone, but they're fun while they last, despite a lackluster control scheme.

If you can accept that your control over your party is very limited as they battle through dungeons, you may enjoy this

Overall I did enjoy some parts of this game and I admire the creativity it brought to the roguelike table. I am a big fan of game developers, especially indie developers trying something new. The game is more oriented toward the "Army Builder" genre lovers than "Roguelike" lovers. It didn't feel good on the Steam Deck, and the repetitive nature of it made me bored and frustrated at times. However, there is something to build on here (no pun intended) and I hope the developers keep moving forward with some great ideas.

Despot's Game: Dystopian Battle Simulator captivates with its uncommon mechanics' mix and amuses with its appropriate meta-modern entries.

Despot’s Game: Dystopian Army Builder is a very interesting blending of genres that helps bring something new to auto battler games. However, its mixing brings far less to the rogue-lite genre, so fans of titles like Hades or Cult of the Lamb will only want to pick it up if they are big fans of auto battlers.

Despot's Game is a cruel rogue-lite set in a dystopian world. Search the labyrinthine world as you appease a sick voyeuristic monster. Command your army, set their formation, and watch each automated encounter. It is brutal, unfair, and guaranteed to make you scream.

This game is a great time, with a couple minor caveats. If you don’t mind the random, roguelike nature of the combat, then you’ll love it. If you’re playing on PC, you’ll love it even more. The writing is snappy, the action is fast-paced, and the character designs are terrific. I had a hard time grappling with the roguelike elements, however. There’s certain patience this sort of system demands of you, and I don’t have enough of it. On the other hand, if running experiments on hapless humans in dank dungeons appeals to you, take heart! Despot’s Game will be right up your alley.

Despot’s Game is perfect for when you’re looking for something with strategy as well as a good laugh. While it’s not a game that will take up a lot of your time, it can be nice to poke your head into a couple of dungeons for an hour or so.

Despot’s Game: Dystopian Army Builder is a really fun if slightly flawed strategy game that I’m glad I decided to check out. While it’s not something I might recommend to most for a purchase it is definitely worth trying out on Game Pass if you are subscribed.
