Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons is a modern take on one of the most iconic Taito IPs.

Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons is a sweet twist on classic Bubble Bobble gameplay, mixing nostalgia with roguelite progression. Its charm lies in the candy-coated visuals, upbeat soundtrack, and bubble-based mechanics, but the grind, control issues, and one-hit kills weigh down the fun. For fans of the series or those seeking a quirky roguelite challenge, it offers a flavorful but imperfect adventure.

Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons fails on every level, showing no respect for the history of the series.

Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons offers an entertaining reimagining of the classic series, combining bubble-blowing mechanics with dynamic dungeons and a progression system that adds some depth. Its colorful aesthetic and the inclusion of classic content add charm and nostalgia, but the repetitiveness of some levels and certain difficulty spikes prevent the experience from being entirely perfect. Even so, it's an entertaining game that can appeal to both veterans and newcomers, albeit with some reservations.

Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons carries the tried-and-true Bubble Bobble gameplay that fans are familiar with, but the lackluster dungeons and repetitive nature of the game will certainly turn players off. The game lacks a compelling hook with its progression system, and by the time you get to the post-game, you'll likely be exhausted. At the very least, the pack-in Bubble Symphony game is nostalgic and offers a fun arcade experience that lessens the blow of the brutally repetitive main game.

BUBBLE BOBBLE Sugar Dungeons has a good idea, but its execution seems to have been done by one of those amateur chefs from culinary reality shows. There's a lot of potential in the idea of using candies and power-ups, but the slow start, combined with the grinding that's tied to the randomness of the dungeons, makes the progression drag. At least it's worth it to be able to play Bubble Symphony in a well-emulated port and with menus in English.

Despite its adorableness, BUBBLE BOBBLE Sugar Dungeons is one of the toughest games that you'll ever play; think Spelunker but even more unforgiving. However, if you're willing to stick to it, you'll end up having a great time mastering its oodles of content. 🍬

Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons attempts to innovate the formula, but the execution doesn't live up to the ambition. The superficial level design, mobile game progression, minimalist presentation, and lack of co-op severely limit the experience. The only real point of interest is the Bubble Symphony extra, which reminds us how solid and fun the series could be. Otherwise, the initial runs may be briefly entertaining, but the underlying repetitiveness makes the title overall unsatisfying.

It doesn't impress in terms of gameplay, visuals, sound, or even concept. Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons falls short on a console like the Nintendo Switch, which has the potential to do so.
