Why play it

After getting sucked into a magical book, Aya and Momiji must find their way back home. Swap between the two girls in battle, so you can utilize their abilities to gain the advantage. Explore every nook and cranny to unravel the mystery of the Book World!

Story and worldbuilding

At a certain rental bookstore in Gensokyo... Like any other day, Kosuzu Motoori tended to the store until one book caught her eye. Although she was quite knowledgeable about magical books, she had never seen anything like it. After making sure no one was around, she stroked the cover with her finger. "Book...King? I guess I'll try reading it." She pulled up a chair, took a seat, and got ready to open the book. It was unbeknownst to her, however, that this would mark the beginning of an incident that would involve all of Gensokyo. Let's check out what's going on at Yokai Mountain. As usual, a pile of fabricated articles lied before the crow tengu reporter, Aya Shameimaru. "Hmm, I don't have enough experience to give this article enough appeal." Aya racked her brain, hoping she could come up with something more interesting after setting off a nuclear explosion on Yokai Mountain. Just then, her sidekick Momiji Inubashiri came rushing into the room. "Hey, Aya! Stop writing fake stories and actually do your job!" Momiji stared down Aya, holding Kisume, the key witness of the explosive incident prior to this, when all of a sudden— "Ahh!" The girls were blinded by a light so bright that it probably reached all of Gensokyo. "Wh-Where is that light coming from!?" "Seems like it's coming from the Human Village. Hmm...smells like a story is in the works. All right, let's go, Momiji!" Momiji tried to stop Aya, but she raced off with her bulletpad and pen instead. As she shook her head, Momiji reluctantly followed Aya. With Kisume in hand. "Ah...ahh... To think that such an extraordinary magical book existed..." Back at Suzunaan, Kosuzu's legs had given out as the magical book floated above her head. Even for someone as fearless and inquisitive as her, all she could do was gaze at such extraordinary power. But Kosuzu decided to take action... Knowing how to read a book's abilities by a mere touch, she knew. She understood that this book should never be opened. Because if so, Gensokyo and the Book World would become connected. However, Aya stood before her, turning around and forcing a smile. And in her hands was the magical book, completely opened. "Sorry, but I already opened it." "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" And just like that, they were all sucked into the book. Will they be able to return safely to Gensokyo!? This marks the start of how two girls began their bullet coverage within the Book World!

A fun game that is made to difficult by its HP system. Fans of Touhou and Metroidvania games will love it, but it might be a hard sell to outsiders.

Touhou Double Focus is a below average release that didn't grab my attention. If you're desperately looking for a Japanese platformer, I seriously recommend you to skip this release and play other better games on the PS Vita library. Save your time and money and avoid Touhou Double Focus!

Ultimately, Touhou Double Focus is a game that appeals to a narrow slice of the gaming community. The tough Metroidvania mechanics won't be for everybody and the game has a bit of that rough, "dojin" or fan-made taste to it. If you enjoy old-school games with an indie feel and loads of Japanese flavor, however, this one just might humor the otaku in you.

Metroidvania in Touhou Project series, where we trying to escape from a book world. I don’t recommend it though even for the fans due to broken gameplay.

I wanted to love this title, having a Mystery Dungeon game on my PS4, however I’ve come to the stern realisation that, maybe, Mystery Dungeon games should just stay on handhelds, for now. Tohou Gensou Wanderer gets a 6 / 10 for me. The asking price of £40 is FAR too high for something like this, but if you like Mystery Dungeon games, or the Touhou franchise, give it a shot!

Everyone has that one friend who regardless of what you tell them not to do, well they've already done it. This is exactly how Touhou Double Focus starts as Aya opens a book that she should not have dragging in those standing around as well as many others into that very book. Those now stuck in the book have a plan for getting out however finding what they need is going to take them on one crazy trip from medieval castles to smoldering deserts and fairy worlds.

Touhou Double Focus is a spin-off of Touhou Project: an uninspired metroidvania which lacks original ideas.

Touhou Double Focus is a solid Metroidvania experience that's held back by its sheer mediocrity.

There are some really great ideas found within Touhou Double Focus, but they aren’t fully executed here. The gameplay needs to be tighter if it’s going to focus on difficulty, and it pales in comparison to other difficult platformers like Shantae. If you get this as part of the physical copy of Touhou Genso Wanderer then by all means check it out, but Double Focus leaves a lot to be desired by itself.
