Why play it

You tried to escape prison but got caught. Instead of prison, they gave you a debt. Manage a toll booth on a desert highway. Check passports, take payments, and decide who passes. Grow fruit, mix cocktails, sell drinks, and dodge the cops. The only way to earn freedom is by paying off your debt.

Story and worldbuilding

Punch in. Let the madness begin. You're the sole toll booth operator on a remote desert highway. At first, it’s routine: press the button, lift the gate, collect the cash. But routine doesn’t last long out here. You plant strange seeds. You grow bizarre fruit. Soon, you're mixing cocktails and selling drinks to whoever rolls up to the gate. Run your station. Grow your crops. Cook. Serve. Survive!

Toll Booth Simulator starts with an…interesting premise and every now and then hints at the sort of addictive routine that makes such games so enjoyable - but it quickly loses focus, burying its most promising ideas beneath a mountain of puddle-deep mechanics that aren’t even particularly entertaining. It’s a repetitive grind wrapped in an experience that feels unfinished and unpolished. Some players may appreciate the sheer variety on offer and enjoy the process of paying a large debt dollar by dollar. Just like in real life. Gee, thanks game.

The main appeal for Toll Booth Simulator is the fact that it isn’t just another store sim. It goes far beyond just working at a toll booth as well which means its got a bit more going for it. It’s a nice, chill time with a few aliens thrown in for good measure. Giving Toll Booth Simulator the Thumb Culture Gold Award was an easy decision.

Overall, Toll Both Simulator gets a big tick from me. It has massive potential, and during the week I have been playing it, there has been a patch every day, so it is actively being worked on and improved based on community feedback, which is great to see. There is already so much in the game and more to come, a good light-hearted fun game, fingers crossed it becomes multiplayer in the future, as you could really cause some chaos.
