Why play it

Nayuta no Kiseki (Trails of Nayuta) is an action-RPG developed by Nihon Falcom for PlayStation Portable. The game belongs to The Legend of Heroes series of role-playing video games, but is more action-oriented, and is not a mainline entry in the series. The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is an English version of the PSP classic "Nayuta no Kiseki (Trails of Nayuta)" and published by NIS America was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows in North America on September 19, 2023, and in Europe and Oceania on September 22.

Story and worldbuilding

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is set in two worlds: the main characters' home world, and a mysterious world called Lost Heaven. The main characters' hometown is Remnant Island, located in the center of Ciencia Sea, a vast ocean with countless islands. Shooting stars have been continually falling from the sky for some time, leaving much of these piled up on the island. Stones known as "Star Fragments" have been discovered in these areas. By shining a light on them in a certain way, people can see the phantom world of Lost Heaven. The story follows Nayuta Herschel, a young aspiring researcher aiming to see what's further beyond the known world, who was just returning to Remnant Island for the summer, when he and his childhood friend Cygna Alhazen find themselves in the world of Lost Heaven through the guidance of the otherworldly fairy Noi, as they get involved in a plot to stop a madman and his right-hand man from destroying Lost Heaven and potentially Nayuta's own world in the process.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is pure gaming comfort food. Its mix of action, platforming, and RPG is too pleasant to resist, especially accompanied by its fantastic soundtrack. It certainly shows its age, and especially its portable origins. But that aside, Nayuta’s tale captures an authentic spirit of classic RPGs that I found as charming as I did entertaining. I’m sure fans of Falcom’s work have this one pre-ordered already, but even if you aren’t in that fandom, give this one a look.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is an effortlessly charming action RPG. Even though the story struggles to engage, there's so much to like about the game's hectic mix of hack-and-slash combat and responsive platforming. An easy recommendation for fans of Ys, or fast-paced, skill-based action titles in general.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a fun action RPG that takes elements of the wider series it's based on and crafts something unique. The minute-to-minute gameplay is also engaging, although with some minor platforming frustrations here and there. While the story may be simplistic and not as politically engrossing as the mainline Trails games, the heartfelt cast of characters and side quests help flesh out its world.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails might show its age, but can still be a good time.

Overall The Legend of Nayuta Boundless Trails is an extremely solid JRPG adventure with a rather simplistic battle and combat system. There’s quite a bit of puzzle platforming that happens throughout the game but the fast-paced combat where you effectively hack and slash your way through waves of enemies feels extremely satisfying.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a faithful port of a PSP classic. It ticks all of the boxes for a typical noughties JRPG that offers a tonne of nostalgia for fans of the genre, but with an arcade action-adventure style that brings a fun pick-up-and-play vibe for a broader audience. That said, it’s a game that shows its considerable age; with few modern improvements added, players may well grow tired of the formulaic gameplay long before the heavily padded content is complete.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, is a great game with solid world-building and an amazing soundtrack to back it up. The characters are enthusiastic and fun, and the gameplay, while somewhat simple, is enjoyable nonetheless. A couple of very minor design issues have carried over from the original PSP version, but they don't take much away from the game.

A lighter side-entry into the Trails series, The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails may not engross you in its narrative, but will surely charm you with its carefree nature.
