Why play it

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak II is the twelfth installment in the main Trails series, serving as a direct sequel to the events of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak. An unexpected visit to the Arkride Solutions Office puts Spriggan Van Arkride to the matter. As Van searches for the culprit behind the accident, Agnès Claudel continues her search for the eighth and last Oct-Genesis.

Story and worldbuilding

S.1209. After the threat of the mafia organization Armata was gone, the Republic of Calvard regained its former peace. But one day, in a corner of Edith City, a bizarre incident occurs in which a CID (Central Intelligence Department) special operations squad was found slaughtered. The Calvard Police and Bracer Guild begin investigating the matter. But sensing that a new time of chaos may come, underground factions also start making moves. Meanwhile, Spriggan Van Arkride also begins his investigation, kick-started by a visit from an unexpected someone. Who is the culprit behind the massacre? Why did they do it? And what will happen to Agnès, who is searching for the Eighth Genesis, the last legacy of her great-grandfather? The brutish roar of a crimson beast, and an encounter with a young boy and girl seeking “something” will lead them down a “Trail” that they cannot escape.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2 makes a few missteps with the pacing of its multiversal story, but it puts a focus on quality character moments and impressive worldbuilding.

Trails through Daybreak 2 is a surprisingly experimental instalment in Falcom's long-running RPG series. Gameplay-wise, it improves upon its predecessor with tighter combat systems, and a greater degree of interactivity during side quests. However, its epilogue-like storytelling is very hit and miss. Some fantastic character development is contrasted by padded narrative beats and a plot device that grows tediously predictable as you progress. Still, with the right expectations, this is another enjoyable romp with Van and the gang.

Trails Through Daybreak II doesn't feel nearly as refreshing as its predecessor, but it's still a solid entry in the long-running series that ticks the necessary boxes (legible text aside). Though its story isn't all that exceptional, the combat is as rewarding as ever and new gameplay features like the Marchen Garten help to make this feel distinct and worthwhile. And while we wouldn't necessarily suggest that this is a great starting point for newcomers, series fans will find lots to love here, even if it won't be topping many lists as a series favourite.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2 manages to improve in some areas while stumbling a bit in others, but still manages to deliver an exciting tale; here is our review.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II works best when viewed as a character-driven epilogue to the first game rather than a full-blown sequel.

Trails Through Daybreak II stands out as a solid sequel that expands on Calvard's political and personal stakes while deepening its characters. Despite a sometimes uneven pace and a technically inferior Switch version, the captivating story and improved combat make it a must-play JRPG. The PS5 remains the best option to fully enjoy the experience and is my top recommendation at this time.

The time loop may be repetitive, but the game has a refined mix of action and turn-based combat. And in my humble opinion, the Daybreak series could have started by being localized into several languages, as for the story, the game really feels like an expansion of Game One, bringing things from other games in the Trails series and making it a little confusing for people who are not used to it.

While The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak II doesn't completely sustain narrative engagement throughout, it features one of the franchise's strongest gameplay systems, masterfully combining turn-based and action combat mechanics.
