The Journey Down: Chapter Two

Chapter 2 is a big step up from the already decent Chapter 1, and delivers lots of rewarding answers on the plot, while introducing enough to make the final chapter worth waiting for, however long that wait might be.

Better than Episode 1 and definitely worth playing.

The Journey Down: Chapter Two is bigger, but not quite better than its predecessor. However, in a three-part act, one chapter has to be the “weakest”, and rather this one than the opener. This game is still very good though, please don't get me wrong.

The Journey Down: Episode 2 does a great job of setting up the final episode of the trilogy while taking us to a new location with a new set of characters to meet and puzzles to solve. It's a better episode when compared to the first chapter of the series, and I definitely recommend you check it out. I'm currently playing the third and final episode of the series, so I'll soon let you know what I think of the ending act for Bwanao, Kito and Lina's story!

The Journey Down: Chapter Two offers more and better story content than Chapter One did, exactly like was hoped. Things bode well for the finale and this chapter elevates the overall feel of the trilogy so far from a status of good point-and-click adventure to something more special than the first chapter taken on its own merits may have led some to expect.

As a point and click adventure fan I fully recommend this to those who are fans of the genre. The unique settings, the loveable cast of characters and return to the glory days of puzzle solving makes the game a real joy. While it takes a while for the story to build and the characters to evolve the payoff is worth it, and you will want to see the story through to its conclusion.

Overall, The Journey Down: Chapter Two is an interesting installment that fans of the genre might want to look into. It is by no means a masterpiece yet, but with another part still in the works, there is definitely potential and room for development on an already a solid base. The characters are entertaining, the Afro-Caribbean setting intriguing, and the creativity in both voice acting and environment is a pleasure to participate in. While the narrative could be fleshed out a little more, the focus seems to be on building a puzzle oriented experience, and if you liked the first chapter or are a big fan of the genre, The Journey Down: Chapter Two is definitely worth looking into.

The Journey Down: Chapter Two was worth the two year wait. It's comfortingly traditional if you pine for the old days, but not laden down with overly elaborate multi-layered puzzles that'll keep you bashing your head against the wall for hours. It's an adventure game for the times where you want to just relax, and maybe feel a little cleverer than you really are. Here's to hoping we're not looking at another long wait for the finale.

Usually, I do a Good and Bad summary at the end of the reviews, but I can't remember the last time I had so much fun with an adventure game. Yes, there are some minor issues and sometimes you find yourself combing the screen for items to interact with, but the overall feeling you have after The Journey Down: Chapter Two leaves me with no doubt that I'm playing a great game.

Sometimes you don't need an epic tale with complex obscure puzzles or a "comedy" that shoves jokes and an irritating protagonist down your throat (hello Daedalic), instead a short fun little adventure that makes you smile and doesn't tick you off is all you need. The Journey Down: Chapter Two is that sort of game, and I enjoyed it enough to ensure I'll be in line for the next phase of the journey.
