Why play it

Welcome Tavernkeep! In this D&D-inspired visual novel you will run a cozy seaside tavern, meet adventurers, gather rumours and mix fate-altering drinks to stop dreams from twisting into nightmares.

Story and worldbuilding

36 years before the events of Tavern Talk, the Wayfarer's Inn's future innkeeper meets their very own party for the first time, as it slowly comes together under the guidance of the Tavernkeeper of the Drowsy Dragon: You. Host a cast of colorful adventurers in your tavern, send them on equally exciting, suspenseful and silly quests and help them develop friendships, rivalries and even romances, all while serving them your most delicious drinks. Maybe with your help, your patrons can uncover what's behind the strange events plaguing Phesoa, that threaten to turn dreams and nightmares into reality.

Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker builds a cozy, slow-paced and charming prequel where a tavern counter is enough to shape destinies. Its dialogues, characters and quest-building systems work very well, although the full English text may be a barrier.

Nuanced characters, amazing LGBTQ+ representation, and a phenomenal atmosphere make Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker an easy recommendation.

Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker charms with its cozy D&D-inspired setting and engaging drink-mixing mechanic that actually impacts the narrative. As a prequel and as a standalone visual novel, it is a confident, emotionally generous piece of work that treats its characters with uncommon care and asks its players to do the same. The weaknesses — softened player agency, a rushed ending, bugged achievements — are real but they are not the experience. The experience is 13 hours in a warm seaside tavern with eight people whose stories are worth knowing, wrapped in a soundtrack that players are wishlisting before the credits roll. That is what this game does, and it does it very well.

The return to the world of Tavern Talk with this prequel is one that doesn’t offer much difference from previous entries, but it’s different enough to make it stand out as a game of its own. In a similar move to the Coffee Talk series, you are welcomed in with gameplay that feels like a warm embrace, where you might know what to expect but will still end up pleasantly surprised by the twists of the stories and the warmth of the new characters. If the developers keep this high standard up in future entries, I’ll certainly be there to play each and every one of them.

Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker holds its own in others. The quest construction, the stat-balancing brew system, and the sense that your choices actually do something give it a layer of involvement that Coffee Talk Tokyo doesn't quite match.

While sharing multiple elements with the Coffee Talk titles, this franchise manages to have a distinct feel of its own worthy of some attention in its own right

Visual novel fans are getting yet another amazing gaming experience with a new standalone Tavern Talk game from Gentle Troll Entertainment. A brand new story set many years before the first game, combined with familiar mechanics, drink mixing features, and intriguing characters presented in a D&D-inspired visual novel adventure that bursts off the pages one chapter at a time!

Overall, Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker weaves together a sprawling story in which your choices actually matter. While that may not be revolutionary on its own, combined with the charm, the autonomy, the genuine representation, it feels earned.
