SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a solid port of a great JRPG from more than two decades ago. It keeps what was special about the original - the story and the characters - and adds to it with new plot elements. While we weren't in love with the combat mechanics or the exploration puzzles, they don't get in the way of a great story. Just like we don't love everything about our family, we could overlook the game's shortcomings to focus on what made it memorable.
Read full review ↗SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered improves nearly everything that could have been improved; it's a worthwhile experience for fans of the original and newcomers alike.
Read full review ↗This might not crack the top of my SaGa list, but it’s still a worthy entry in my favorite cult RPG series. Frankly though, I’m glad I waited for the remaster to try it.
Read full review ↗A fresh feeling, flexible combat system tied to a series of dungeons that are thematically interesting but fundamentally humdrum. Special features and additions to this remaster that highlight its beauty, give better accessibility to weapon stocks, and give the tempo a much-needed speed boost, but feels incomplete compared to its remaster contemporaries. Ultimately, I had a gratifying experience playing this game in full and checking it off my bucket list, but it's a game which should be seen more as an incremental improvement and way to preserve it on modern consoles than something that's likely to draw in a new crowd.
Read full review ↗The complex combat system and menus are off-putting, the visual "upgrades" are lacking, and yet I still found myself coming back to see what's next. Saga Frontier 2 Remastered is a tough recommendation for those unfamiliar with the series, but its concept and storytelling method have undeniable appeal. If you can push through its flaws and steep learning curve, and perhaps partake in a little external reading, there's a solid game beneath its flaws.
Read full review ↗SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered lets the best parts of the original game shine, while sanding out some of the rough edges that can detract from the player experience. The story shines as one of the best ones in the franchise, and the addition of new types of combat keeps things feeling pretty fresh. This is a full featured remaster, and I hope we continue to see the SaGa series get this kind of love and care from Square Enix; it deserves it.
Read full review ↗I’m not sure why Square Enix has decided to become so prolific with the SaGa property. Three games in a single 12-month timespan is the most ambitious release schedule we’ve ever seen for it. But I’m also not complaining. SaGa has always been something of the forgotten child of Square Enix’s JRPG properties. With any luck, that’s changing now, and a whole bunch of people are going to realise just how good Frontier 2 here is for the first time.
Read full review ↗SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a wonderful experience even in 2025, thanks to great combat, gorgeous visuals and some modern tweaks.
Read full review ↗SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is another invaluable entry in Square Enix's increasing catalog of updated games. But this particular PlayStation 1 gem is distinct for its varying risks, impeccable style, and tendency to be different.
Read full review ↗I really enjoyed what they did with the title, especially in the gameplay department. The new additions and improvements really managed to elevate the game, bringing its full potential to action.
