Why play it

The classic action-RPG and life-simulation gameplay, beloved by Rune Factory fans across the globe, is taken in a bold new direction in Guardians of Azuma. This all-new adventure takes place in the never-before-seen eastern country of Azuma where you will assume the Earth Dancer powers and fight against the spreading Blight to bring hope back to this once-prosperous land.

Story and worldbuilding

The Celestial Collapse—a calamity caused by a colossal object crashing into the eastern lands known as Azuma. The devastating impact sent fragments of terrain to the skies above and the seas below. With the earth shattered, the power provided by the runes ceased to flow. The gods of nature vanished soon after. Mountains crumbled and fields withered, leaving the people with nothing…not even hope. You awaken, startled by a dream of duelling dragons. You don’t remember how or why, but a voice resonates within you. “Accept the power of an Earth Dancer. Use this power to save the land."

Once it finds its footing, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is an engaging romp through a charming and dynamic world.

On the whole, Guardians of Azuma is a stellar experience on any platform, with the Switch 2 offering that extra touch of greatness. Those who are particularly sensitive to performance issues will find themselves in safer hands with the upgrade, so long as you're willing to pay an upcharge for the privilege.

The journey through Azuma is a journey packed with a mish-mash of boring dungeons and weak RPG progression tools, supported by a fun cast of characters and decent story.

The Rune Factory series continues with more characters to befriend, more locations to farm and more monsters to fight in Guardians of Azuma.

I went into this playthrough blind and expected the game to take me roughly 10 hours to finish the main story, I was pleasantly surprised by the length and even more so by the story. Now that I’ve finished the story, the real endgame has begun.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is very easy to recommend, especially for those who haven’t experienced the PC version yet. Although all previously released additional content is included here, it is mostly cosmetic and does not, by itself, justify purchasing a second copy for players who have already played it. Overall, despite a few technical hiccups, the integration between combat, management systems, and relationship mechanics works remarkably well. This variety of gameplay elements creates an engaging and satisfying loop that constantly encourages players to progress, strengthen bonds, and discover what comes next. It’s a solid, charming experience that’s hard to put down after the first few hours, even if this is your first entry in the franchise.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma marks the series’ full maturity. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre, but smart tweaks make the experience less punishing and more dynamic. Its inspired setting and improved hardware support deliver the most polished and enjoyable entry yet. If you want a game that balances relaxing moments with layered RPG progression, this new chapter from Marvelous is absolutely worth your attention.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a fantastic addition to the series that, in many ways, finally delivers on what fans have been asking for. If you enjoy luxuriously colored landscapes in an open world, rich character interactions, tons and tons of ways to build your bonds while also having creative freedom over the growth of your villages, this is the game for you.
