A collect-a-thon about a frog fixing the solar system after it explodes for some reason.

Story and worldbuilding

The year is 12,012. A tyrannical, universe-dominating corporation simply known as "The Company" has been in power of the entire universe for centuries after a world-ending bioweapon was unleashed onto the masses. And now? The solar system has been destroyed by unknown celestial forces. Wait. Turns out I'm very, very wrong. Silly me. I should really double-check my sources. Seems like some guys blew it up by accident while they were playing 8-ball pool. There was a frog there too, but he was in the bathroom whilst it all happened. And it also turns out the pool balls are like voodoo-doll versions of the planets? How's that meant to work? What an illogical, silly plot. As RUBATO, you and your friends must fix the solar system piece by piece, whilst under the persecution of "The Company" and their security force, the Space Police!

Rubato is a wildly unpredictable physics-based platformer that thrives on chaos, blending fast-paced traversal, absurd humor, and constant mechanical shifts into an experience that defies easy explanation. What begins as a seemingly simple 2D adventure quickly evolves into a genre-hopping, idea-dense journey filled with strange characters, unexpected gameplay twists, and a surprisingly compelling underlying narrative. While its early pacing and tonal randomness may alienate some players, those who embrace its unconventional structure will find a deeply engaging and rewarding experience that stands out in the indie space.

I had a good time, but was only really able to enjoy the game in shorter bursts. If you’re a platformer veteran and looking for something that is out of your comfort zone, you really cannot go wrong with Rubato. Even though I don’t think I’ll personally revisit it any time soon.
