Story and worldbuilding

The gods created man and man created stories. The primordial creator Marda brought forth the land of Mardias. In ages past a mighty battle rocked this land, when Elore, the king of the gods, fought three malicious deities: Death, Saruin and Schirach. After a long and drawn-out struggle, Death and Schirach were sealed away and rendered powerless, with the final deity Saruin also trapped through the power of the Fatestones and the noble sacrifice of the hero Mirsa. Now 1000 years have passed since that titanic battle. The Fatestones lie scattered across the world and the gods of evil are resurgent once more. Eight heroes set off on their own journeys, as if guided by the hand of fate. What tales will these adventurers weave across the vast tapestry of Mardias? You are the only one who can decide!

There may still be a little too much grinding for my taste, but Minstrel SaGa is a game that demands you put in the hard work and rewards you with a thrilling, non-linear adventure for it. Suffice to say, Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered – International Edition, and the SaGa series in general, can be very polarising, especially if you’ve jumped into it expecting another Final Fantasy. But if you take the time to learn how it works, to understand what it expects of you, you’ll find an RPG gem that may just be amongst Square Enix’s best.

A super-complete, impressive release of a landmark JRPG, Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered International is being reintroduced to players. With a completely unconventional structure, open world, minimal guidance, and absolute freedom, it sounds enticing to any RPG fan.

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song offers a uniquely free-form RPG experience built around exploration, choice, and emergent storytelling. While its systems can feel harsh and unclear at first, those who commit to learning them will find a rewarding and highly replayable adventure. With its non-linear progression, open quest structure, and flexible party building, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song stands as one of the most distinctive JRPGs ever made. It challenges traditional RPG expectations and rewards players who embrace discovery and experimentation, making it a standout title for genre veterans.

Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered International has a lot of secret rules that you can learn. You can change your character in many ways, make choices that affect the game, and see a world that feels alive in subtle ways. For others, its lack of popularity, old-fashioned look, and hard-to-learn techniques will overshadow its good points.

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered is a faithful remake of a deep, classic turn-based RPG. Its complex mechanics and high degree of freedom may overwhelm new players, but fans of traditional JRPGs will appreciate its rich narrative and strategic gameplay.

For fans of the series, or who’ve been dying for a translated version to enjoy, this should be nice but it’s a harder sell otherwise in a modern eShop full of other options

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered International is a meticulously preserved artifact of JRPG history, now more accessible than ever thanks to the international localization. Its appeal lies in its unparalleled non-linearity, offering eight unique paths and a truly personal narrative journey driven by exploration and curiosity. The modern quality-of-life enhancements mitigate the grind of the original. However, its uncompromising design, high initial difficulty, and deliberate lack of guidance mean this classic remains a challenging experience. It's not a game for those seeking linear progression, but for players willing to embrace its chaotic freedom, it delivers a profound and endlessly replayable epic.

And so unfortunately the majority of my experience with Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered International was struggling to constantly avoid battles, constant save scumming just to make it through story beats, hoping that the more time I spent playing the more I would learn, assuming that it was simply my unfamiliarity that was leading to the friction. I imagine most of the fan base would suggest that I simply don't understand the game. Whilst I can appreciate that my lifestyle doesn't necessarily allow me the indulgence Minstrel's Song might demand, I think this is a good example of a game that would have benefited more from a Remake than a Remaster – and the opportunity to include some quality of life options that have become the norm since the games initial release, let alone accessibility options. Considering how much I struggled during my review, at this point I would only recommend the game to people who already know the SaGa series and it all it entails, and even more specifically a fans of Minstrel Songs previous release.
