Why play it

An Anti-Coin Collection Platformer inspired by Japanese folktales. Befriend an assortment of ghosts and ghouls as you explore the world hidden in the dusk.

Story and worldbuilding

Enter the world of Rising Dusk. A land permanently in the hours of twilight and inhabited by an assortment of ghouls. The only way out may be to avoid every coin. As the day shines the last of its golden light over the land, an eerie realm begins to form in the shadows. This spectral world is home to the Yokai; An assortment of ghosts, ghouls and demons that rise in the dusk and play through the night. When a young girl, Tamako, spots one of these yokai, she finds herself trapped in their world. If she can navigate this perilous land, the key to returning home may lie on the strange new mountain on the horizon.

Rising Dusk doesn't beat around the bush: it gets its foot in the door, shows up, fulfills its role very well and ends its journey without delay. The short campaign of this beautiful and creative platformer is a reflection of the work of an artist with an obvious knowledge of the world of games and a vast cultural background that he applied to his work with due knowledge of the facts. There's no secret here: if you enjoy platform titles, get ready to experience first-hand a notable little thing of the genre.

This somewhat odd puzzle action game takes a swing on doing something different, but mostly feels like a miss

Rising Dusk treads its own 2D platformer beats with a fresh perspective on the collectible coins that have populated the genre for decades. The execution is as good as the idea, and the concept of “anti-currencies” is used to create intuitive puzzles and replayability through secrets, secondary paths and alternative exits. The visuals may not attract attention, but the lo-fi songs take a calming beat to drive a campaign with a flexible structure that will please fans of 2D games.
