Why play it

Resident Evil 4 is a 2011 Adventure, Shooter game rated 9.1/10 from 97.7k ratings, with a main story of about 11h, available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One.

Resident Evil 4 is directly based off the Wii port, having all the new features that the Wii added. Some of the key features of this version are stunning HD graphics running at a smooth 60 frames per second for the first time. It also features a complete visual overhaul to bring this revered title to the highest graphical quality ever. It has been fully optimized for the wide screen, texts have been sharpened and textures have been upgraded on characters, backgrounds and in-game objects. However, it should be noted that the cutscenes of the Separate Ways scenario are not in HD and have had their resolution lowered and placed in sepia format. Aside from the updated HUD, the Movie Browser is fixed to now display real time cut-scenes instead of the PS2 pre-rendered cut-scene, like it was the Wii version. The Mercenaries costumes cheat remain and fully work.

Story and worldbuilding

Special agent Leon S. Kennedy is sent on a mission to rescue the kidnapped U.S. President’s daughter Ashley. Finding his way to a rural village in Europe, he faces new threats that are a departure from the traditional lumbering zombie enemies of the earlier instalments in the series. Leon battles horrific new creatures infested by a new threat called Las Plagas and faces off against an aggressive group of enemies including mind-controlled villagers that are tied to Los Illuminados - the mysterious cult behind the abduction.

Resident Evil 4 is, and will forever remain, a masterpiece. It says a lot when you can pop in a game over a decade old, and still get as engrossed into everything it has to offer like it was the first time ever experiencing it. If you have somehow still never played this game, put down whatever game(s) you are playing and make room for this survival horror smash. And if you've played it countless times on several platforms, it's still worth forking over a couple of bucks to revisit this legendary game.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the best video games of all time, and if you’ve somehow managed to avoid it all these years, the Switch edition is a decent, convenient way to catch up – but the fact that the Wii Edition still has a legitimate claim as the 'definitive' version proves irksome. Handheld mode is the biggest draw here and that’s not only where the game’s ageing visuals work best, but also where its control scheme makes the most sense.

The Resident Evil 4 brings a new intensity to this survival horror classic. Enhanced visuals, updated gameplay, and careful story adjustments make it a must-play for any horror fan. Capcom’s use of the RE Engine delivers a hauntingly immersive experience, from environmental details to chilling soundscapes. Whether you’re revisiting Leon’s mission or encountering it for the first time, this remake offers everything you could want from a modern horror game.

Only fools never change their minds, and I must belong to this unenviable category since the Resident Evil 4 Remake hasn't changed my opinion on Capcom's title, which I still consider one of the most overrated ever. But it would be foolish not to acknowledge the excellent work by Capcom in this remake. Like the second and third entries in the survival horror series (more shooter than horror in this case), the remake is highly praised for its refined gameplay, enhanced narrative that highlights the character cast, and technical aspects that meet current standards, despite being cross-gen. Sure, not everything is perfect, with the notable absence of Separate Ways, but the overall quality of the package is undeniable.

Resident Evil 4 is a masterfully streamlined reimagining of Leon and Ashley's 18 years of the original adventure. It smartly evolves several aspects of that game to make it more exciting to the modern audience. By doing all this, it once again cements itself as the greatest action horror game of all time.

‎Resident Evil 4 is still a marvel.‎‎ Its history, villains, characters and everything that surrounds it have made the title one of the great must-sees of the genre. Despite not having aged too well, it continues to be a benchmark of the genre and a game that marked a before and after when launched on the market. Now it remains only to hope that Resident Evil 4 Remake is a reality and that, who knows, it picks up the baton of its predecessor taking the GOTY.‎

It may not be the definitive version of Resident Evil 4, but it is still a fun one nonetheless.
