Sigono has proven once again that it understands powerful emotional storytelling with OPUS: Prism Peak, a game about self-reflection, acknowledging what's come before, and moving on. It's the most Studio Ghibli-like game I've ever played, in a way that goes beyond aesthetics. If you're not careful, it's easy to miss some crucial unlockables and some of the game's best moments; a second run-through might be quicker, but it still requires you to play at a particular pace. And the Switch 2 isn't the best way to play at the time of writing, but once it's fully developed, there are few better story and character-driven experiences on the console than this.

I would highly recommend OPUS: Prism Peak, but not the Switch 2 version, at least not until they iron out the bugs with more patches. Get it on PC instead.

Opus: Prism Peak isn’t a game for everyone, as rather than action and adrenaline, it focuses primarily on emotions, a melancholic atmosphere and a slow narrative pace. Yet it is precisely this that allows it to leave a much stronger impression than many bigger titles. Its greatest strength lies in the humanity of the protagonist, Eugene, who doesn’t come across as a classic video-game saviour of the world, but as an ordinary person full of flaws, regrets and insecurities. His journey towards coming to terms with the past feels very personal and believable. The photography-based gameplay is also highly original, with the camera serving not merely as a mechanic but as a vital part of the story itself and the exploration of memories. The stunning audiovisual presentation, reminiscent of an interactive anime film, also plays a huge role. Opus: Prism Peak thus offers an exceptional experience that you won’t remember for its action, but for the atmosphere and emotions it leaves you with.

OPUS: Prism Peak is a powerful journey that unflinchingly tells us to embrace change. Its surreal setting only serves to portray that none of our lives are that different. Through photography, memories, and community, its universal message of hope is one that lasts forever.

Its message is a powerful one, and Eugene’s emotional journey will undoubtedly resonate with most players, but the gameplay holds back Opus: Prism Peak’s full potential, allowing repetition to undermine the impact of its narrative.

A game that, as an anime feature film, would be nothing short of wonderful. Despite losing itself in performance issues and gameplay choices, it still manages to deliver a compelling journey and ultimately succeeding in entertaining and making the player think, leading us to reflect on how much attention we truly pay to other people. Recommended, but not for everyone.
