Despite my complete lack of understanding of football and how to manage a club, Nutmeg! A Nostalgic Deckbuilding Football Manager was not a bad game by any means. It definitely sucked me in at moments and honestly had me losing track of time at a few points. But I do get the sense that if you are not well-versed in the nuance of football, this game is not for you.

Simple and rather flat at its core, NUTMEG! takes its retro charm and makes for truly addictive gameplay.

Yes, navigating that retro office takes a little getting used to, but once the mechanics click, the ‘just one more match’ (which quickly turns into ‘one more season’) pull is absolutely irresistible. If you’re looking for a fun, addictive trip down memory lane that respects your time while still testing your tactical football management chops, Nutmeg is an absolute must-play.

The randomness will test your patience at times, no doubt. But here’s the thing, it never feels cheap. It feels honest. And that goes a long way. Sumo Digital have nailed something special here. As a reviewer usually exclusive to PS5, this being my first PC review says a lot, and I doubt anything will top it. Personally, I hope the game gets a console release, as so far this is my personal game of the year. Because of that, NUTMEG! A Nostalgic Deckbuilding Football Manager earns the Thumb Culture Platinum Award. Less is more, and there’s absolutely no need to go to VAR on this one.
