The good points of Mugen Souls Z are certainly there, but it does its best to keep them from you for entirely too long. With a tutorial that drags on for hours, a frustratingly repetitive plot, and walls of dialogue that feel endless, only the most dedicated fan will have the patience to enjoy the game. Unless you love grinding and crafting more than plot, this is probably one you should avoid.

Mugen Souls Z is one more low-budget JRPG determined to prove that more dialogue, more menus, more flying numbers and plenty of anime stereotypes automatically result in a better game. Beneath the mountains of statistics and clichés lies a dull adventure that occasionally remembers to be entertaining before immediately burying itself beneath another needless cut-scene or boring combat scenario.

Mugen Souls Z on the Nintendo Switch was honestly a great idea. It’s packed with the “moe” aesthetics that I find hard not to fall in love with as a huge fan of Hyperdimension and its similar titles from the same company. Now, being a portable title also means the comfort of being “switch-on-and-play” where you can control your playtime and availability without having to be glued to your chair for an hour or two.

Mugen Souls Z delivers simple fun as a port of the late PS3-game but brings all its flaws with it as well.

Mugen Souls Z is a fascinating game on the one hand, very problematic on the other. This porting, useful only for recovering the famous content censored in our territories, does not do justice to a title that is certainly not unforgettable but not even avoidable, which instead is lost in anonymity.

You can tell that the game has been around for nearly ten years and the game suffers from a silly and complicated story but there’s a lot to enjoy.

Mugen Souls Z represents a notable evolution from its predecessor with various novelties and upgrades that turn it into a notably distinct and superior experience compared to the first game. With a simple plot centered on humor, it may not be an ideal choice for those looking for a dense narrative. However, for players who are satisfied with a solid combat system, it offers the full plate with almost unlimited character customization and improvement possibilities.

Though it takes advantage of its predecessor's concept, Mugen Souls Z falls in the same traps that made it a weak, aesthetically dated game with a poorly organized gameplay and narrative structure. It can still be a curious experience for those who love fanservice and humor works, but it's a tough recommendation overall.

Mugen Souls Z makes the mechanics and the gameplay more understandable and less harsh for trying to have fun. Having it be uncensored and on the Nintendo Switch also helps out quite a bit! I recommend this game to all fans of the JRPG genre that doesn’t mind a little steamy fan service in their games.
