Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains is full of Star Wars flashiness and some truly innovative mechanics that really mix things up. At the same time, the random nature of its gameplay systems and team-based approach make it less fun than it could have been. 🎲

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains is a competent variation on the classic formula and shines thanks to the charisma of the brands, but after a few rounds, the novelty wears off and unfortunately, it becomes just another game in the library.

Monopoly Star Wars: Heroes and Villains, as Anakin may put it, isn’t “rough and irritating” like sand, but it isn’t particularly playing “soft and smooth” like Naboo either. It’s somewhere in the middle.

Monopoly Star Wars: Heroes vs. Villains occupies the middle ground between experimentation and a familiar formula; while its pacing is uneven, the game proves more entertaining than its initial premise might suggest. It is an experiment that does not always strike the perfect balance between classic Monopoly and its team-based approach, yet -when played with the right group- it delivers fast-paced and highly enjoyable matches.

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains has pleasantly surprised me. It’s still Monopoly, with the limitations typical of this type of game—especially its lack of game modes and the excessive influence that starting events have on how games unfold. However, it adapts the Star Wars universe quite well and allows for both online and local play.

I’ll give Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains credit for being more creative and innovative than expected. Just like most people prior to the game’s launch, I assumed this was simply going to be Monopoly with some Star Wars fanservice sprinkled on top. Thankfully, there’s more to it than meets the eye, as it’s actually a brand new way to play a classic game. Whether that makes it BETTER than traditional Monopoly is honestly up to the player.

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains takes Monopoly’s board, properties, and dice and rebuilds them around Team vs. Team play, shared Credits, Influence Points, battles, GO Events, and Star Wars locations. I came away seeing it more as a Star Wars team board game than a classic Monopoly update, which makes group play more active and the match easier to finish. The main problem is that GO Events can swing too much of the board. Repeated commentary and event scenes also wear thin after a few matches. Star Wars fans looking for a couch or online board-game night should get more from it than someone who mainly wants the original Monopoly rules.

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains is a highly successful console adaptation and surprises in some respects by putting an original spin on the familiar Monopoly rules. Unfortunately, however, the game remains a little too limited to justify its price tag.

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains improves the game where it matters, making it much faster and more fun than the standard version. Team-based gameplay, character abilities, stealing properties, hyperspace travel, Cantina actions, and adjustable match lengths all modernize the formula without complicating it.
