Maid of Sker is a first-person survival horror, set in a remote hotel with a macabre history from Welsh folklore. Brave the nightmares of the Quiet Men. When they arrive, do not panic — don't even breathe. Featuring realistic 4k visuals with gameplay focused on story, exploration and no-weapon survival tactics. Run out of breath and — suffer.

Though Maid of Sker has an intriguing premise, it is very often a frustrating chore to play.

An effectively eerie backdrop is undone slightly by frustrating stealth in this enjoyable indie horror game.

Maid Of Sker is more frightening when it’s not trying to scare you.

Maid of Sker may be this developer's best attempt at horror yet, but it still falls short of something actually worth playing.

Maid of Sker comes with all the features of a good survival-horror game, such as a well-designed eerie location, a great atmosphere, an engaging story, fearsome enemies, well-implemented 3D audio and the right amount of scares, but it does not try to break from the mold of the Resident Evil formula in any significant way. The lack of any real innovation may put off some, but if expectations are kept in check, Maid of Sker can provide a few hours of enjoyable horror fun.

All in all, though, Maid of Sker is a very enjoyable gaming experience that I recommend to all fans of story-driven horror games.

‎Maid of Sker is an interesting game, a Survival Horror that tries to gain an audience with a little-worked next-gen conversion, but with a lot of room for enjoyment. In addition, it is not the most terrifying game in the Xbox Series catalog and I appreciate that, because the scare and tension are sometimes valued above the terror, which can directly scare more than one person with a weak heart.‎

Maid of Sker brings some good elements of terror, but it leaves something to be desired in several other points, such as gameplay, characters and puzzles. In the end, it's just a graphically improved title for that average product launched in 2020.

Maid of Sker was made by a small core team of less than 15 people, and at times it does show. As noted above, the base game is very short for a modern game. Even in this game’s genre, this one feels a little bit short for me. This may be as a result of the repetitiveness in the enemies and the puzzles. That being said, the atmosphere that is built though the soundscape of this game is excellent. You can feel the pressure and tension of sneaking past groups of enemies, and the relief of snatching the item that you need to progress without being found.

With that being said, Maid of Sker is still hugely entertaining, especially for people that are aware of the literary traditions that it's tapping into. As an aesthetic, it's probably a little nuanced and subtle for its own good (let's face it, the video game sector isn't big on rewarding nuance and subtlety), but it's great and distinctive. It's just disappointing that the development team struggled so hard in their efforts to make a compelling game to go with it.
