Junkster might not care about fleshing out its protagonist's backstory, but it focuses on what matters: an unusual mechanic that gives the player the freedom to progress however they see fit. The idea of ​​structuring the levels like magazines was a great touch—especially for tying into the art style—though I do think this concept could have been explored further in other areas. Even so, it’s a really cool title that deserves your attention.

I think Junkster is well worth a download. If you’re a fan of classic 3D Platformers, and want to play something relatively light with some surprisingly novel gameplay mechanics, I can think of worse ways to spend a weekend. Give it a shot, it might surprise you! It’s out tomorrow on Xbox and Game Pass, as well as PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

For fans of non-grindy, collectathon platformers, and shorter accessible titles, Junkster is well worth picking up. Just don’t forget to smash the blue crates!

At the end of the day, our experiences are always individual, and this game fulfilled its purpose for me. Perhaps someone with higher expectations or hoping for something more ambitious might find what's delivered here relatively mediocre, but I emphasize that despite appearing to be just another 3D indie platformer, Junkster reveals a concern for the structuring of its levels and challenges that elevate the game to a much more interesting level.
