Homura: The Crimson Warriors - Deluxe Edition

Homura: The Crimson Warriors is a more than worthy otome visual novel addition to the Nintendo Switch’s lineup.

This is not an otome game for everyone. If the historical setting puts you off, or if you do not want to read a lot of text about politics and clans, it may not be your cup of tea. However, if you enjoy more dramatic, mature, and melancholic stories with strong characters and a well-crafted atmosphere, Homura is definitely worth your attention.

Between Sekigahara, Osaka, and the Sanada clan, Homura offers a well-set visual novel with action, focused more on historical drama than pure romance.

Charming historical fantasy Otome visual novel on Switch

While it’s not my favorite of all time, Homura: The Crimson Warriors was a fun bit of escapism from everything else that surprised me with plenty of action and excitement that I wasn’t ready for. We have a good female lead, a compelling story, and a solid addition that reminds me why I really enjoy Idea Factory 90% of the time. The carnage, the historical information and, of course, the lovely bits of affection that get your pulse racing. If you’re interested in your quest for romance to get a bit bloody, I’d say Homura is a fantastic “slice” of life.

Many people assume that the only point of otome is the romance, and the appeal is minimal beyond your interest in male fan service. Anyone who has played otome games realises that this is not the case, and Homura: The Crimson Warriors is a particularly strong example of this. It’s both “girl and reverse harem of pretty men” AND quality historical fiction, and that’s a combination that’s hard to put down.

Homura: The Crimson Warriors delivers strong voice acting, beautiful character art, and an appealing historical setting, but its slow pacing and lackluster port features keep it from standing out beyond its core otome audience. Fans of Otomate’s historical romances will likely enjoy it, but newcomers may find it hard to connect with.

Ultimately, I enjoyed my time with Homura: The Crimson Warriors for the most part. But as someone who is now just a bit too obsessed and addicted to otome games, I was disappointed by the severe lack of extras. I mean, I guess I knew a historical otome wouldn’t be the most romance filled title ever. But I had hoped there would at least be some satisfying extras to unlock. Homura would really benefit from a fandisc. At the same time though, it’s not my first choice among otome games I’ve played that don’t have a sequel or fandisc, yet I hope will get one. That honor still goes to Sympathy Kiss. Nonetheless, if you enjoy history, or you’re a fan of visual novels full of battles and historical war excitement, this might be a game for you. I definitely think it has plenty to enjoy. But, if you’re mainly an otome fan and not majorly into history or war, this probably won’t be the next best otome for you to pick up. Or even if you’re a huge historical otome fan specifically, I still find the lack of unlockable extras to be quite disappointing.

Homura: The Crimson Warriors is a solid, enjoyable otome visual novel, but also very aware of its target audience.

I would recommend the game. If you love learning more about Japanese history and enjoy romance sprinkled in, then Homura: The Crimson Warriors is definitely for you. I really enjoyed playing it; it was history mixed in with some magic and good characters
