Why play it

A tech-noir survival horror short story, set in the urban decay of a long abandoned British city. It's a Shipper's biggest fear. You're grounded in the exclusion zone, twenty miles of death and decay sealed off by the towering, suffocating walls erected after the collapse. Play as Mica, an unlicensed black market shipper who will stop at nothing to find her missing partner. Alone, stranded, and with limited resources at your disposal you'll have to push your way through the zone, solve environmental puzzles, manage resources and fight for your life as you try to find a way to escape beyond the wall.

Story and worldbuilding

It’s been 12 days since Sasha left. You talked about it, you argued about it and you even laughed about it. Anybody in their right mind knew going to that place was a death wish, a one-way trip to the end of the line. But Sasha wasn’t one to scare easily, she wanted answers and there was only one place those answers held any truth. Her mind was already made up, you just didn’t expect her to do it without you. Twelve sleepless nights later and you finally get the call. Tax has found someone, A border security suit looking to make some extra credits on the down-low. He can get you clearance, a two hour window to fly into the zone, find Sasha and get the hell out of there. You make your way across the exclusion zone but something’s wrong. The nav's running in circles and you're losing altitude. Before you know it a blinding white fills the sky. The dash goes dark and your hover drops out of the air like a lead balloon, slamming into the paved streets below. You wake to the acrid smell of an electrical fire, rain pounding on the cracked windshield. You're surrounded by the crumbling remains of what were once considered homes. You need to find a way out. Call for evac, scale the walls. Something. Anything. Survive.

Hollowbody straddles the line between Silent Hill homage and clone, but more often than not, it's a nostalgic and creepy success.

Hollowbody is a testament to the work of Hamley, and is phenomenal within its own right, but the dedication to various cult classic horror and sci-fi games only adds to how enamored I was with the game; this is how you make a game heavily inspired by other media while making a whole new experience entirely, in a nutshell. But don’t get me wrong, Hollowbody is so much more than its inspirations, made up of multiple moving parts that provide fans of the survival horror genre with something new and refreshing.

At a glance, it’s clear that Silent Hill and Resident Evil were major influences on indie horror game Hollowbody. While its retro PS2-style visuals are what initially drew me toward the game, inside of that is a competent survival horror experience that, while not doing too many things different from its predecessors, establishes a world and setting that’s worth exploring. If you’re looking for a game to scratch the itch of those classic survival horror experiences, Hollowbody is definitely worth your time.

Hollowbody is a solid survival-horror experience that takes clear inspiration from the genre's early 2000s offerings.

I couldn't completely love it, but I can't say it fundamentally disappointed me either: Hollowbody delivers exactly what it promises. It's a survival horror game with a PS2 feel, one that wants to make you feel vulnerable and disoriented in a city that doesn't want you to survive, and it succeeds for long stretches with a coherence that many games with much larger budgets fail to maintain. If you grew up with the first Silent Hill games, with Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, with those early-millennium survival horror games that demanded patience and delivered pure tension in return, you'll find something here worth the price of admission (which was affordable, by the way). If, on the other hand, you're accustomed to a contemporary feel, or if the mechanical flaws detract from immersion rather than add difficulty, you'll probably leave the exclusion zone feeling more frustrated than satisfied. As I did, if I may say so. Hollowbody is a game that deserves to exist and deserves attention. However, it does not deserve to be forgiven for flaws that could have been smoothed out further, with a little more time, or perhaps just a few more handfuls of honest feedback.

The truth is, however, that most of the flaws or shortcomings that usually go hand in hand with the productions of the era that *Hollowbody* is trying to emulate can easily be overlooked if the content is of high quality, and fortunately, that is the case here.

Hollowbody succeeds thanks to its awesome atmosphere, spooky audio design, and rewarding exploration. Although repetitive encounters and clunky combat prevent it from reaching the heights of the genre's best, its strengths comfortably outweigh its flaws. Headware Games has delivered a memorable experience that captures the spirit of classic survival horror without feeling trapped by nostalgia. For fans craving an old-school horror experience on PS5, this unsettling adventure is easy to recommend.

Inspired by classic survival horror games, Hollowbody knows how to appeal to nostalgic players with its fixed camera angles and backtracking mechanics. However, it falls short by delivering an unimpactful story and uninspired enemies, failing to create the level of tension that is essential for the genre.

"Psychological Horror in a Suffocating Environment" Hollowbody delivers a psychological horror experience that relies heavily on atmosphere. It succeeds in creating a visually and aurally oppressive world, with a mysterious narrative that fosters curiosity and exploration. Despite some flaws in the combat and puzzles, it remains a solid experience for fans of classic horror who seek slow-burn tension rather than straightforward action.
