Why play it

Gothic 1 Remake is a 2026 Role-playing (RPG), Adventure game rated 7.9/10 from 38.5k ratings, with a main story of about 19h, available on PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S.

Gothic 1 Remake is an action role-playing game set in a third-person perspective within a fantasy open world. It is a remake of the 2001 game Gothic, developed by Alkimia Interactive using Unreal Engine 5. The player controls a nameless prisoner sent into the Valley of Mines, a penal colony surrounded by a magical barrier. The game features NPC routines, faction-based quest paths, and a progression system where the player starts with no skills and must learn them from trainers. Navigation is done without a minimap, and the game world is 10 to 30 percent larger than the original, with expanded chapters and additional quest content. Combat and skill systems are based on the original game's design.

Story and worldbuilding

In a medieval fantasy world where humans are losing a war against Orcs, the king sentences all criminals to labor in ore mines to forge weapons. To prevent escape, twelve magicians erect a magical barrier over the mining colony, but the spell goes out of control, trapping the magicians inside and allowing the convicts to overthrow their guards. The prisoners split into three factions: the Old Camp, which trades ore with the king; the New Camp, which hoards ore to attempt destroying the barrier; and the Brotherhood, a religious group worshipping a being called the Sleeper. An unnamed prisoner is thrown into the colony carrying a letter for the Fire Mages. After joining one of the factions and uncovering that the Sleeper is actually a dangerous demon summoned by the Orcs centuries ago, the hero must find a way into the temple beneath the Orc city to confront and banish the creature, which causes the barrier to collapse and frees the colony.

Gothic 1 Remake is undeniably the best way to play this cult classic RPG, even if certain aspects of it have aged like milk.

Gothic 1 Remake may have made concessions for new players, but remains an RPG for people who think Daggerfall was the last good Bethesda game.

Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful retelling of the original Gothic, warts and all. Perhaps too ambitious for its budget, it offers even hardened gamers a truly unique, hardcore roleplaying experience. While weighed down by a litany of bugs and issues, there is a lovingly made product underneath – but it's hard to recommend in its current state.

Gothic 1 Remake faithfully reconstructs a cult classic RPG from a team that clearly respected the original, and feels like a game from a bygone era largely for the better.

Gothic 1 Remake turned out to be a rather mixed remake. The final result was influenced by the team's inexperience and budget constraints, which led to a certain rawness in the remake and the implementation of both successful and unsuccessful solutions. Despite this, Alkimia Interactive handled the legacy of Piranha Bytes with care, recreating Gothic 1 in a way that makes it accessible to a wider audience.

A memorable, atmospheric adventure that grinds down unsuspecting players before granting them any ounce of power, this remake of a role-playing game ahead of its time feels more frustrating than fresh.

Gothic 1 Remake is a rare breed that actually respects its source material instead of trying to reinvent itself. It’s not perfect, and it definitely won’t suit everyone, but it delivers exactly what long-time fans wanted — and that’s something a lot of modern remakes fail to do.

However, while it might still be for a niche audience, this is very much an example of how to do a remake correctly. The developers have addressed the big issues in the original Gothic, while maintaining and building on everything that made it such a cult icon.

Gothic 1 Remake definitely has no intention of abandoning its original core principles in favor of so-called greater accessibility or conforming to current genre standards. This gives it a certain authenticity, but at the same time it also limits it from exploring more sophisticated possibilities in world design, resource management, campaign progression, and adaptability to different playstyles, becoming somewhat anachronistic and unbalanced in terms of cost and reward for the experience.

Gothic 1 Remake is everything a good remake should strive to be. It stays remarkably faithful to the spirit of the original while delivering meaningful improvements across nearly every aspect of the experience. Even its more drastic changes feel like natural extensions of the Gothic formula rather than unnecessary departures. Can it replace the original? That's a difficult question for me to answer objectively, as I have too much history with Classic. However, if you're new to the series, there is no better place to begin. What ultimately keeps the remake from true greatness are its technical shortcomings and the inherent challenges of balancing a single-player RPG. There are certainly areas where it could be refined further, but even in its current form, Gothic 1 Remake stands as one of the year's strongest releases and a worthy revival of a beloved classic.
