Why play it

Hunt, fight and trap a variety of new and familiar ghouls and phantasms, all remastered in HD resolution. Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered equips you with cool gadgets and upgradeable weapons to play with in huge boss fights and destructible environments. Scan and analyze targets with the P.K.E. Meter and Paragoggles, then strap on your Proton Pack to wear ghosts down with the blast stream before wrangling them with the capture stream.

Story and worldbuilding

As the new rookie on the Ghostbusters crew, you’ll team up with your favorite characters from the films, reunited by the voices of Aykroyd, Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson as Stantz, Spengler, Venkman and Zeddemore, alongside Annie Potts, Brian Doyle-Murray, William Atherton and Max von Sydow. Manhattan is overrun once more by ghosts, demons and other paranormal creatures unleashed by a mysterious force, and only the Ghostbusters can drive this evil back to whatever dimension it crawled from and save the Big Apple.

Ghostbusters was a great tie-in back in 2009 but this remaster doesn't really make for a vastly improved experience.

As an officially licensed instalment in a beloved franchise, Ghostbusters: The Video Game is still a resounding success ten years on. But as a third-person shooter with physics-based ghost capturing, it's a bit one-note. The atmosphere, design, and voice cast are perfect, but the combat peaks early and quickly become a bore. The main campaign is enjoyable enough that it's worth enduring the repetition, though.

Mechanically-speaking, there's little you haven’t seen elsewhere, but it’s a good-looking, fun third-person romp dripping in slimy nostalgia, and the chance to spend time in the company of these old friends – some of them dearly departed – is too good to pass up if you've ever strapped on your school backpack and gone out to catch ghosts in the garden.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered is enjoyable in short doses, but before long, it begins to feel like a chore. While I loved this game as an 11-year-old, I would find it incredibly difficult to suggest this to someone who wasn’t already a big fan of the Ghostbusters franchise.

If you did not play the original, and are a fan of the Ghostbusters franchise, then perhaps add it on your Xbox wishlist for when it’s on offer… if nothing else, you get to spend a few hours with Ackroyd, Murray, Ramis & Hudson hunting for ghosts and enjoying all of that ghostbuster-y banter!

I recommend Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered to fans of the original game and of the movies as it is fan service at its best.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered brings back a game from a previous generation that does a very good job at portraying the much appreciated movie series. Under a third person action game, this remaster features plenty of fun moments and a great amount of ghosts to catch, while it does not go much further at making improvements beyond the original game and ends up being rather short.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered is an entertaining game for fans of the franchise. Even though those who have already played the 2009 original won’t see any gameplay or graphical improvements, this is still the best, most authentic Ghostbusters experience by far (outside of living in the corner penthouse of Spook Central).

Ghostbusters: The Video game is still a good game after all those years. But this is not a good remaster.
