A remastered version of Fate/Stay Night, a fantasy action drama visual novel and TYPE-Moon's first-ever commercial release in 2004. Based on the 2012 release of Réalta Nua, it features a series-first adaptation into languages such as English and Simplified Chinese, as well as graphics and animations rendered in full HD. Experience in vivid detail the story of Shirou Emiya, a teenage boy with dreams of becoming a Hero of Justice, and his battle revolving around the omnipotent wish-granting vessel, the Holy Grail.

Story and worldbuilding

The Holy Grail War is a ritual held in Fuyuki City by magi grasping to reach the Root. Seven magi, known as Masters, gather to compete over possession of the Holy Grail, which possesses the power to fulfill any of its bearer's wishes. They fight other Masters for supremacy by summoning Heroic Spirits, known as Servants, called upon by the Holy Grail. However, throughout the past four Holy Grail Wars, history has yet to see a single victor. During the Fourth Holy Grail War ten years ago, Shirou Emiya was saved from amidst the fires of war by the self-proclaimed mage Kiritsugu Emiya. The young Shirou started living with Kiritsugu and persistently asked for instruction in magecraft, much to the mage's disapproval. On the night prior to Kiritsugu's death, Shirou promised his adoptive father that he'll become a Hero of Justice. Fast forward to the present. On one quiet eve, Shirou gets involved in the Holy Grail War and is assailed by a Servant. Just as the glint of steel threatens to take his life, a girl clad in knightly armor appears to stop the fatal attack. The Servant, who came to the rescue of the would-be Hero of Justice, and the Master, saved by the Heroic Spirit of the Sword; their fates are in motion...

The bottom line is that Fate/Stay Night is a keystone work in a genre that’s never been more popular on our side of the globe. For decades, it seemed like this historically important (and good as heck by itself anyway) visual novel would never be readily available and professionally localized like this. Anyone with an interest in anime, gaming, and alternative forms of digital storytelling owes it to themselves to check this story out. It’s one of the all-time greats, and if you do take the time (and it does take a lot of time), you’ll easily understand why Fate is such a big deal nowadays. And if this is your first time, welcome to one of the most absurd, yet rewarding rabbit holes you can dive into.

A great starting point for Fate fans, and a beautiful remaster for existing ones. Though it suffers from the wordiness that plagues Nasu's earlier work, it's a beautiful and compelling story of ideals, reality, and magic.

I had a great time with Fate/stay Night Remastered. With such a compelling narrative, and truly excellent character writing, it’s easy for me to understand now how Fate became such a widely beloved franchise. The remaster provides a great entry point for people like me who are experiencing this story for the first time. I’m excited to get deeper into the series, and particularly to experience more stories featuring these characters.

Considering the success of the series in the whole world, it's curious that only now Fate/Stay Night Remastered brings to the west the visual novel that kickstarted the franchise. Be it as it may, the important part is that we finally can enjoy this incredible story, with its unique universe and captivating characters. Though the additions to the new version could have been more significant, it continues to be practically a must in the library of anyone who enjoys big adventures, even being an entry point to the genre.

Fate/stay night REMASTERD finally allows fans to officially enjoy the first narrative in the Fate series. For those who have always been curious about reading the VN and finding out why many consider the anime to be a bad version of the history, well, here's the chance to discover. Just be prepared for some boring moments where there are long monologues or super detailed descriptions of some things that may not be so interesting or that have already been described minutes before.

Fate/Stay Night Remastered is an excellent way to finally know a classic of its genre that wasn't available officially outside Japan yet. With an excellent discussion about morality and a fascinating setting in Kinoko Nasu's works' shared universe, this work is still a great choice for visual novel fans.

All in all, Fate/stay night REMASTERED is a flawed masterpiece landmark title in gaming. If you’re a fan of visual novels, fantasy, or want to start the Fate franchise at the very beginning, this is your chance.

While the upgraded graphics look amazing, and the adaptation to English and Simplified Chinese are great things, there isn’t anything else to make the game “Remastered”, For this is a visual novel, and there aren’t any mechanics or anything to remaster as the games mostly dialogue and visuals. While the price isn’t the worst, for a remaster with no real added content or value versus the original, it is hard to justify the remaster versus finding the original for cheap. However, in my opinion, the story itself is one of the top visual novels I’ve played and helps this game score high.
