Ultimately, you could do a lot worse than eFootball if you're looking for an offline, single-player (or co-op) football game. Its World Tour mode is relatively light but it's fun enough, and the game's budget price point matches its ambition.With any luck, this will only be the starting point for eFootball's presence on Switch 2, and Konami will hopefully follow this up with a more fully-featured game, or a straight crossplay-enabled port of the main free-to-play live service title. Judged on its own merits, though, as it stands, only EA Sports FC offers better (albeit less smooth) football gameplay on Switch 2.

Despite its dated graphics, eFootball Kick-Off! leaves a positive impression and feels like a true successor to PES. It revives a style of football games where the greatest reward lies not off the pitch, but on it. Every match is fun, the pace keeps you playing, and the World Cup setting makes this installment an excellent excuse to play on Nintendo Switch 2.

Gameplay remains the real strength of this production, thanks to an immediate, enjoyable approach close to simulation, working well both in quick matches and in World Tour mode.

I don’t mind that eFootball Kick-Off is a smaller, slightly stripped-down version for the Switch 2, as it actually takes advantage of the system’s portability with more arcadey, “pick up and play” modes that feel like a match made in heaven for the console. It runs well, controls decently enough, and has enough content to keep you busy for a while, though this is the perfect case of a game that is best suited in smaller, twenty minute sessions at a time.

eFootball Kick-Off successfully revives the magic of classic Pro Evolution Soccer. Fast-paced, accessible and incredibly fun, it captures everything that made the legendary series so beloved.

The phrase ‘Nintendo Switch Edition’ usually signals a letdown for Nintendo and football fans, but this time it is actually for the better! Yes, some of the modes are a little bare-bones and there are some odd decisions made, but there are also no microtransactions and some nice touches for newbies. Perhaps most importantly, for ~$20USD there’s classic, fully-realised football gameplay - and you can’t say fairer than that.

eFootball Kick-Off! is more modest in terms of content than one might expect, yet it is very solid where it counts. Konami manages to recapture the feel of PES’s glory days, particularly regarding match pacing and general on-pitch behavior. While its limitations in game modes and depth are evident, they do not overshadow the actual gameplay experience. Although it may not be the definitive comeback many fans have been awaiting for years, it does prove that Konami still knows how to create a highly entertaining football game when the focus remains on the action on the pitch.

As someone who grew up with PES and has a genuine love for football, I came into this expecting a fun football game, but I got an accessible and enjoyable experience that really carves out its own identity. It might not offer the depth some of the biggest football simulations offer. It offers fast-paced gameplay, polished visuals, and easy-to-learn controls, making it a fantastic title to pick up on the Nintendo Switch 2.
