Build a card deck of landscape features; organise your territory on a Tetris-like playfield; battle enemies and bosses to progress. It might sound complicated, but this is an ingenious experiment in game design by combination

Over time, Drop Duchy Complete Edition did grow on me, providing a unique challenge for anyone who likes their puzzles served with a side of brutal strategy.

Drop Duchy is an excellent example of how to mix completely different genres in a way that feels both functional and coherent. In fact, it works so well that it's sometimes hard to tell whether I'm playing a puzzle game with roguelike elements or the opposite. The different factions and synergies manage to extend a longevity that is a bit limited by its puzzle elements, certainly more forgiving than Tetris's.

Once again, a handful of concepts have come together here in a combination I never would have imagined even in my wildest dreams. Yet the Tetris-inspired city-building deckbuilding roguelike Drop Duchy works astonishingly well. Every single system interlocks with remarkable care and flows together as if this genre mix had always been the most obvious idea imaginable. And it is precisely this sense of effortless cohesion that turns “I’ll just play one more round” into an entire evening disappearing without notice. How does this keep happening again and again?

Closing the loop, Drop Duchy: Complete Edition isn’t a game that wins you over with flashy promises or striking visuals, but with the quiet strength of its gameplay loop — a blend of three distant genres that somehow feel born to coexist. It’s a strategic puzzle that doesn’t need a story to keep you glued to the grid, chasing the next combo, the next synergy, the next line that flips a doomed match on its head. And when you finally step away from the screen, you realise it wasn’t the graphics, the music, or even the factions that held you there: it was that mix of order and chaos, planning and improvisation, crafted with rare care. Drop Duchy: Complete Edition isn’t for everyone, but if even one of its three worlds speaks to you, be warned: the mill will keep dozing, you won’t.

In spite of a few gripes with the combat, Drop Duchy: Complete Edition maintains a strong and engaging gameplay loop that benefits this style of mid-paced rogue-like. If you are a fan of placement puzzles, this takes the experience to the next level – even if it does overreach at times.

Drop Duchy is a bold experiment in game design, blending Tetris-style mechanics with the progression found in deck-builders. Despite its delightful art style and fairly brilliant gameplay, the game suffers from significant repetition over time and a noticeable lack of narrative depth. It remains, however, an excellent debut title for Sleepy Mill Studio, recommended for those seeking roguelite-style puzzle challenges.

Drop Duchy scratches an itch that I didn’t realise needed itching. The randomness of nodes, variety of deckbuilding cards, boss battles and the simple, if unexpected combat mechanics add a different flavour to proceedings. No two runs being the same keeps it feeling fresh, and after a few, you’ll find yourself thinking less and acting more on instinct. The different factions also provide starkly different experiences, with how I played during a Duchy run incredibly different to that of The Republic, or The Tribe, for example.

There are so many puzzle and strategy elements in Drop Duchy - Complete Edition yet it ties them all together into one super-fun formula. 🏹
