Why play it

Arkane Studios’ 2012 Game of the Year, Dishonored, and all of its additional content - Dunwall City Trials, The Knife of Dunwall, The Brigmore Witches and Void Walker’s Arsenal – comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Dishonored: Definitive Edition! Experience Dishonored plus all of its additional content on the new console systems for the first time, complete with enhanced graphics that take full advantage of the powerful hardware of this generation.

Story and worldbuilding

Dishonored is set in Dunwall, an industrial whaling city where strange steampunk-inspired technology and otherworldly forces coexist in the shadows. You are the once-trusted bodyguard of the beloved Empress. Framed for her murder, you become an infamous assassin, known only by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. In a time of uncertainty, when the city is besieged by plague and ruled by a corrupt government armed with industrial technologies, dark forces conspire to bestow upon you abilities beyond those of any common man, but at what cost? The truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city, and the life you once had is gone forever.

Dishonored Definitive Edition doesn't live up to its name, but the core game and its DLC are still stylish and fun.

A better version of a great game, but not as definitive as it could be.

It may not be as sprawling as The Phantom Pain, but this is one of Xbox 360's greatest sneakathons and plays as well as it ever did. If you didn't buy it before, reach for your wallet immediately.

Despite everything that Dishonored still does right, the Definitive Edition is a lacklustre port. The 'improved' graphics can hardly be called remastered, and the lack of a better frame rate is very disappointing. As such, we wouldn't recommend this to those who've played it before.

Maybe the flurry of remastered games this generation has changed what we picture when a game has a subtitle like "Definitive Edition" attached to it. With Rare Replay, Grand Theft Auto V and Mega Man Legacy Collection feeling like works of love rather than profit, it can be disappointing to see such a straight port emerge on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Dishonored isn’t a game that tries to be everything to everyone. But what it does, it does brilliantly. It offers freedom, style, a well-crafted world, and an incredibly powerful atmosphere. Despite its minor flaws, it retains its status as a modern classic—one worth revisiting or discovering for the very first time. Because some games age like fine wine. And according to the British Academy Games Awards, this game is the best wine of 2013. Even though it has its flaws, it hasn’t lost any of its originality or charm, even after all these years. And one last piece of advice: watch out for the rats.

Dishonored is still a great game nearly a decade later. This stealth-action game will go down in the history books as one of the best games in the genre and put Arkane Studios on the map as one of the world's best developers.

Fans of the series won't gain much from this iteration, but for those who haven't played Dishonored before, the Definitive Edition is a great game that's worth checking out.
