Death end re;Quest Code Z feels like an alternate universe fanfic that adds little to the series while scaling back its most interesting parts.

Death end re;Quest: Code Z is a mix of visual novel and mystery dungeon roguelike, with an intriguing story and plenty of horror.

Death End re;Quest: Code Z has some strong ideas on paper and a few redeeming qualities—namely, its voice acting and character art—but when the story is a mess and the game is almost unplayable, even longtime fans are going to have a hard time justifying sticking with it.

Compile Heart’s dip into testing the waters with a roguelike isn’t perfect, but it winds up being a fun diversion for fans of the franchise.

Death end reQuest Code Z is certainly a brave experiment but flawed in every way. The transition to roguelike gameplay is an interesting idea, but the execution leaves much to be desired, with monotonous dungeons, poorly calibrated difficulty, and a narrative that fails to match the depth of its predecessors.

For almost fifty American dollars, you are not getting your money’s worth. Death end re;Quest Code Z is outrageously overpriced. The visuals look like it’s a twenty-dollar PlayStation 3 downloadable game, and the low-effort visual novel scenes have no energy or dynamism.

Death end re;Quest: Code Z is a major fumble for what has so far been Idea Factory's most promising franchise yet. The idea of a sci-fi horror mystery dungeon adventure is right up my alley, but confusing writing and frustrating gameplay mechanics hold this one back and make it one of the most frustrating games I've played all year.

Death end re;Quest: Code Z had potential but fell short. Despite the returning cast and Sayaka's appeal, a weak plot and bland gameplay hold it back, making it a spin-off suited only for die-hard fans
