Why play it

Corpse Party: Sweet Sachiko's Hysteric Birthday Bash is a different type of adventure in the Corpse Party series that stars the violent and murderous Sachiko Shinozaki, who has decided to invite her victims to Heavenly Host Elementary School to celebrate her birthday. However, this isn’t the type of party where the guests leave with a smile on their faces. Instead, Sachiko plans to force the students to participate in twisted games for her amusement. Will the students survive Sachiko’s celebration, or will they meet a Wrong End once again?

Story and worldbuilding

Sachiko Shinozaki, the vengeful spirit responsible for the deaths of countless children and adults alike, is turning 7 again (being dead, she never truly ages), and is thus graciously granting her victims 24 hours of amnesty so they can serve as guests at her birthday party. However, if these party-goers thought that Sachiko’s shindig was going to be all fun and games, they thought wrong: Sachiko has invited everyone—including many of the poor souls she’s already killed—to participate in various activities for her amusement, with an overarching (yet heavily twisted) theme of “romantic comedy.” This game of “ship or die” takes the Corpse Party universe in a totally new direction, but the hellish outcome for these poor, unfortunate students remains the same…

All in all, this is an interesting title in the Corpse Party series, but it’s not something for everyone. It’s an almost entirely lighthearted story mixed with pure visual novel gameplay. If you enjoy the other games in the Corpse Party series, understand what you like about them before dipping into this game. If you’re looking for horror then this game won’t be for you, but if you enjoy the characters enough to be willing to watch them in a parody, you’ll be able to have a lot of fun with this title.

Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash may hold appeal to hardcore Corpse Party fans, giving the chance to see several characters from different schools meet or reunite and interact with each other. Beyond that, the story can’t figure out what it wants to be, tries to be everything, doesn’t do anything particularly well, and ends up undermining what it does right. Padded out to about 10 hours in length, it’s at least worth the $20 price tag in that regard. I’ll still play the regular Corpse Party games some time, but ultimately I took little away from this spin-off.

Corpse Party: Sweet Sachiko's Hysteric Birthday Bash is an interesting divergence from the usual gory terror of the Corpse Party franchise. It's also a gargantuan crossover event that might leave players feeling lost or confused if they aren't caught up on every piece of Corpse Party media so far. Still, despite the somewhat daunting amount of catching up you'd have to do if you wanted to be totally in the loop, the latest Corpse Party is a wacky and absurd treat that any visual novel fan is sure to get a kick out of.

Die-hards may love these new stories with their beloved cast, but anyone else may find Corpse Party: Sweet Sachiko's Hysteric Birthday Bash's story lacking and weak.

Corpse Party: Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash is a welcome addition to the series that focuses more on the fun instead of the death we’re used to seeing.

As I said before, if you have no experience with the Corpse Party franchise, there’s nothing to debate here – do not play this game. For fans of the series, though, I still don’t think I’d recommend this game. Between the weak storytelling and pointless nature of the narrative, I can’t say that it’s worth your time.

A bizarre, yet oddly entertaining entry in the Corpse Party series. It takes the dark atmosphere the series is known for and manages to make a romantic comedy spin-off out of it that somehow works.
