Why play it

Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! is the latest entry in the Cladun fantasy action RPG series. You as the player will meet classic heroes from Japan's Sengoku Era and help the souls of the dead settle their unfinished business. Grant peace to these souls by traveling across feudal Japan and fighting your way through dungeons filled with monsters and traps!

Story and worldbuilding

"Japan--The Sengoku Period. The years of civil war and unrest between feudal lords has finally come to an end. This story is set in Arcanus Cella. A realm where souls, burdened by regret, gather. The only way a soul can leave this realm and return to the cycle of reincarnation... is to lift that regret. For some, their hopes were fulfilled. For others, their dreams were crushed. Now, a new story begins..." Set in Japan's Sengoku Era, you wake up in the mysterious land of Arcanus Cella where the souls of the dead gather as they await reincarnation. However, some souls have unfinished business that needs to be settled before they can reincarnate. As the player, you will assist these souls by traveling to real-world locations in feudal Japan and fighting your way through dangerous dungeons filled with monsters and traps.

There is more to this game, a lot more, but I just don't care. Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! can be played for hundreds of hours, but these are hours I want to spend with something I actually like. There are a lot of facets here, including quests I can take, a bizarre Fortify feature, an art studio where I can customize characters and gear, and time challenges for each of the dungeons that make up the story mode. Again, all of that I should enjoy, and yet it just does nothing for me. If you can get into this game — and I recommend you play the demo before you buy — you'll probably have a lot more fun than I did. Which is to say you'll have any amount of fun at all.

Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku!'s bite-sized stages are best suited to quick stints of dungeon delving. Stay much longer, and you might stumble across the frustrations that lie in its depths. Bouts of trial and error gameplay drag down an otherwise addictive release, and convoluted upgrade systems keep you from getting straight into the action. Still, the process of powering up your pixelated protagonist is a rewarding one once you find your groove.

ClaDun Returns might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it will definitely fill a void for players who want a throwback to something from the retro days that displays strong fundamentals towards its dungeon crawling roots. The game is loaded with content as there are tons of stages, and its compact brevity is ideal for portable playthroughs. Unfortunately, this same feature is also holding the game back, making it an extremely repetitively and somewhat flawed experience.

Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku! is a well done throwback to adventure games of the late 80s and early 90s.

Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! can offer a amusing challenge that scratches an addictive itch, but those will need to stomach some of its frustrations to find what makes it a good game and reap the rewarding gameplay after taking a few missteps inside its challenging dungeons.

Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku is a fun and enjoyable game. It has little to no faults, it looks gorgeous, it also has a huge replay value with Co-op, and trying to beat your best times in dungeons. If you enjoyed games like The Binding Of Isaac then you will love this. While it may not be as difficult, it is still as fun.

ClaDun Returns: This is Sengoku! is a game that reminds us of an older style of RPGs without losing the desire to modernize some mechanics that would feel out of place nowadays, and the game achieves it successfully. It's a fun experience in small doses and, if a bit forgettable, makes the hours invested in it worthwhile.
