Chocobo GP is second only to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when it comes to modern karting games. On the track it delivers brilliantly satisfying karting gameplay, and all at a beautifully smooth frame rate.

Slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy them a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.

Chocobo GP is a delightful surprise from Square Enix, a slick and addictive effort that serves up chaotic kart racing action featuring a generous roster of Final Fantasy characters battling it out on well-designed tracks inspired by locations from across the franchise's history. Yes, the story mode may be a bit of a misfire, but with plenty of other single player content to dig into and the promise of 64-player carnage via the online Chocobo GP mode, this is one of the most polished and entertaining kart racers currently available on Switch and, with a free Lite version dropping at launch, you've got nothing to lose by checking it out for yourself before committing to a purchase.

While the racing itself is solid enough, limitations on multiplayer and strange monetization gimmicks hold this cart racer back.

Chocobo GP does little new, and is trailing the pack compared to similar games. However, it brings Final Fantasy fan service to racing wonderfully and still remains a fun time, with a lot of potential growth via the planned Seasons.

Chocobo GP is a really great flavor for the kart-racing genre. Not only is it a fine collection of Final Fantasy franchise memories in one place, but it uses them nicely as well.

If Chocobo GP had been a free-to-play title, most of the criticism would still be here, but it would at least feel more appropriate for what it was going for.

Chocobo GP marks the return of racing games based on these beloved Final Fantasy characters and this is nothing short of a very welcome new effort in this line, with a large and varied cast, as well as an immense amount of content to unlock. The gameplay is fairly simple and accessible, the main campaign acts as a great motivator to keep us going and the online multiplayer is a charm. Chocobo GP is a game that will keep its players around the screen for many fun hours.

If half the ambition that was put into monetizing the title was put into building a fairer progression system and equally whimsical in its gameplay base and circuit construction, we could have one of the most fun kart games of recent years here. Chocobo GP is a racing game that feels more like an arcade game. The game looks cheerful and colorful, but when it comes to the controls and speed of the cars, it is very disappointing. The controls aren't hard to get through, but they still don't feel quite right. You will certainly be able to laugh about it with friends, but you don't have to assume a top game.
