Why play it

A mainline Atelier game that's completely offline, standalone, and without gacha elements. This mainline entry sticks to the longtime traditional Atelier series gameplay experience while also building upon it. Atelier fans can enjoy an evolution of the familiar Synthesis and Turn-based Battle systems, culminating in a heartwarming story for all to enjoy. A separate original title set in the same world of the "Atelier Resleriana" gacha game awaits from developers Gust & Team Ninja.

Story and worldbuilding

Two young adults return to their lost hometown in search of truth and to bring back what they hold dear. The town of Hallfein was once situated at the border of three provinces, and thrived thanks to mining and trade. However, a mysterious disaster struck this peaceful town, causing most of its residents to disappear. The town became a restricted area, and only investigators dispatched from the capital were allowed to enter. As time passed, restrictions on the town were lifted, and a plan to restore it was initiated. Seizing this opportunity, a young woman and a young man, having come of age after being driven from Hallfein long ago, now return to the land they once called home. The former hopes to restore the shop left behind by her missing grandfather, and the latter seeks to investigate the mementos left to him by his father. While their reasons for returning differ, they share one common goal: uncovering the cause of the townspeople's mysterious disappearance. After meeting in their hometown, the two embark on a journey together to seek the truth, unaware of the encounters and revelations that await them...

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian succeeds through the strength of the sum of its parts. Its story and dialogue are a bit obtrusive at points, but the simple loop of fashioning items to flog them to forge even better ones is compelling. With strategic turn-based combat and breezy presentation, this is an overall enjoyable RPG time sink – even if its character designs and anime tropes may immediately turn some players away.

Between a restrained scope and structure that harkens back to the Atelier games of old, a bevvy of fresh gameplay twists to call its own, and a metric ton of fanservice for veterans, Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian feels like a triumphant celebration of the entire series' legacy.More importantly, it's just a really great RPG experience. Appropriately, it mixes together a bunch of quality ingredients - a heartwarming narrative, strategic and dynamic turn-based combat, complex crafting systems - and synthesises them into a jolly little romp of an adventure. There's certainly a bump in the road or two, but the ride is too enjoyable to linger on those for long.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is a course correction that is bound to welcome new players, while also pleasing series super fans with a greatest hits of Atelier series systems and mechanics, and serves as everything the gacha should've been.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian looks and feels cheap (I hate to go there, but it’s unavoidable) to play, and is full of what feel like kitbashed structural systems clumsily molded into a single player game that suffers from its connection to a failed gacha joint. It bums me out to say it, but that’s the vibe.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian isn’t just another entry in the series. It’s a lovingly crafted, ambitious, and brilliantly executed RPG. It strikes a perfect balance between the relaxing, almost meditative loop of alchemy and shop management and the thrilling, tactical combat and exploration. A story filled with mystery lends a sense of urgency to the whole experience, while the presence of beloved characters ties the entire series together. Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is the culmination of years of development for the series. It’s cleverly designed, beautifully interconnected, and immensely entertaining. Without exaggeration, it’s one of the best titles in its category and an absolute must-play for all fans of the genre.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is a charming yet rushed game built on the foundation of a now‑defunct gacha title. Nevertheless, it attempts to win back fans who were dissatisfied with the radical changes introduced in Atelier Yumia.

Atelier Resleriana is a must-play. It successfully returns to its roots by removing tedious menus, making alchemy incredibly engaging, and delivering its best combat yet. Don't sleep on this JRPG.
