Why play it

It’s not about saving the world. In this "leisure adventure RPG," failing student Marie pursues alchemy, adventures, and quests while aiming to graduate in five years. "Atelier Marie," the origin of the Atelier series, has been remade with new elements! The remake changes include: Character designs and event illustrations have been revamped, 2D animations have added and there are now 3D models of characters and stages. The tutorial and navigation of the game’s features have been expanded and improved. The methods of moving around the city and collecting items in the field has been modified to meet modern-day demands, making it more comfortable and easier to play. The new Unlimited Mode, which allows you to play at a more relaxed pace by removing the five year deadline, and the addition of new events that enable interactions with new characters.

Story and worldbuilding

At the Royal Academy of Magic (the Academy for short), Marie is failing in her attempts to study alchemy. One day, she is given an atelier by her professor as part of a special graduation exam. In order to graduate, Marie must complete an item that will impress her professor. But first, Marie must strive to improve her alchemy skills, collect ingredients, and earn money to hire adventurers and buy recipes and utensils... Add all of that to the synthesis, battles, and quests she must undertake, and it's clear that she has a lot to do before she’s ready for her exam! It's up to you to choose where to begin! Work hard to graduate from the Academy, but be sure to enjoy yourself along the way.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg is an impressively well-realized revisit to a long-lost RPG classic. What it lacks in length or complexity, it makes up for in charm and quality; this is the kind of game that you can get sucked into for an hour or two at a time without even realizing it. Its laid-back atmosphere, open-ended gameplay, and lovely visuals all combine to make this a must-buy for fans of the series, and a highly recommended title for those who want to see what Atelier is all about.

Like the original, Atelier Marie Remake has a pretty small scope, with a playthrough easily taking less than ten hours and most players aren’t likely to do more than two playthroughs. The changes to this game make it a joy to look at and smooth to play with very few issues.

A charming art style, modern UI, and many quality of life improvements make this the best way to experience the origin of the Atelier series.

Atelier Marie Remake is an outstanding re-imagining that takes everything that worked about the original game while modernizing and creating a better-flowing experience.

Overall, I did have fun with Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg. However, the lack of an immersive story was a significant letdown, especially for an RPG. The gameplay, while basic was entertaining, especially in the beginning when I was immersed in optimizing my gameplay. However, since things are quite simple, the game does not provide anything particularly noteworthy or enticing. This title is by no means bad, but it did not leave a strong impact on me.

Faithful to the original game where it should be, renewed where it can make a difference, using a 3D world compared to the 2D original and a new, more relaxed game mode, but keeping the mechanics intact and as close to the source as possible. Not only will this remake be heartwarming material for fans of the Atelier series, it will be a charming welcome for newcomers as well.

This refresher course on the game that started a decades-long series may not be sitting at the top of the class, but it still earns high marks.

It’s got a great appeal and at the same time, doesn’t require a huge time investment. In a very busy year of games (and backlog), that’s a huge boon in my books. I pray that it does well enough that Gust will consider doing the next 4 games that never came across the ocean.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg will not be winning any awards for best Atelier entry, but its aim was never to achieve this.

Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg Remake is a fantastic game, it faithfully recaptures the original in a modern style while offering players a fine tuned gameplay experience without sacrificing its identity. The new soundtrack is excellent and the game takes a super streamlined approach with the well established formula of the series. This title may just be the best game in the series with its perfectly pitched length and tremendously addictive gameplay loop.
